I guess I really am from a different time. Yesterday I was driving back home from the island and I see this car with writing on the back window: "She's tying the knot so buy her a shot". And then it had this girl's Venmo info on there so people could send her money.

I would honestly be mortified to be asking strangers for money, especially for a drink! I just can't fathom what would possess someone to do that. I remember being about 22 and my car broke down and feeling so bad about asking if someone could give me a quarter just so I could call a tow truck. Am I really so far out of it that this type of behavior is commonplace?
There are lots of folks begging for money so they can buy a drink.

We are in a "side hustle" world. It used to just be girl scouts and Jehovah's witnesses who were willing to make you uncomfortable with their upfront manner. Now I have to deal with 10 mom's willing to ask me if I want candles or if my wife needs make up, or cookware, etc.

Asking for money is just an extension of that willingness to "hustle" for money. I think it also speaks to the degradation of our ability to provide a living wage to our employees. But mostly it is the internet telling people how easy it is to make another $1,000 a month by just asking people to give it to you.

And yet you know there's people Vemoing her money so I'm not sure which is more disturbing lol
I wonder if it's because when you venmo that stranger $10.00, it's not a big deal and you KNOW what they want it for. My kids are very concerned that they don't know exactly what money they might give to a charity does, or goes to, and how much is just lost to people running the organization. At least when Mindy wants money bc she just got married and she's driving a POS 2002 Nissan with her venmo in the window, you know she needs your money and there's no middle-manager taking most of what you give; Minday's going to keep the lights on and/or get drunk this weekend.

VENMO ME $8 SO I CAN DRINK A PINT...&...
I'LL SEND YOU A PICTURE OF ME DRINKNING THAT PINT.

that will require me to set up a venmo account
Send me a picture of you drinking that pint purchased with my $8, and I'll have it printed and framed for my office wall. What's your venmo? :) I will also agree to mail that picture to the Cyburbian deemed most worthy each year to next hang the traveling photo of @Planit drinking the venmo pint.

I hope the black cat we dropped off at the pound this morning finds a nice home. I hate taking black cats - especially during kitten season - to the pound. Seems they already have one strike against them, being black, but kittens are so adorable, it's harder for adults to get a chance at adoption. At least he's a sweetheart, so :crossedfingers:

That was sweet of you. It could have become road pizza or coyote bait.

Forget about the minivan & the A/C - I need the money for my retirement.

I saw a request for " just married" on I - 77 S in WV.

I may try this on my next road trip. I have to come up with a donation-worthy cause. Maybe JNA retirement, but I'll keep the money.

Re: feet...

A few years back I took my youngest to a birthday party at a local gymnastics place. Anybody entering the gym area had to take their shoes and socks off. A mom of one of the other kids took her kid in there. This mom was absolutely gorgeous by just about any standard. I'm not a foot guy (don't care about them one way or another) but I happened to look down at her feet when we were in the gymnastics area and they were a cross between those pictures @Doohickie and @dandy_warhol posted. Real Hobbit material! Just seemed so out of place and I will never forget that. Is 40 years old too old to form a formative memory?

I love Venmo. My kid uses it to pay for her car insurance, phone, etc. I just let that money pile up then use it to pay people for fantasy sports buy-ins, or paying someone back for drinks or lunch, or for feet pics.

Every once in awhile I'll do a transfer from Venmo into my checking account.

I still consider myself a cash person (very rarely do I have less than $100 in cash on me), but for a P2P platform, Venmo is great.

This is basically how I use Venmo. I only got it because somebody wanted to pay for Girl Scout Cookies from my daughter through Venmo. So now most of the money I receive in there is either from somebody for Girl Scout Cookies or from one of my siblings when they're contributing to some sort of group gift. Then I use the balance to pay for fantasy football or betting pools at work or when a buddy is at Costco and sends me a picture of some sweet Lego set for like 75% off that my kids absolutely must have.

Our youngest is in 2nd grade and one of the moms seems to be hitting us up for overly extravagant gifts for their teacher (who lives in a $2m house and definitely does not need our charity) seemingly every few weeks (back to school, holidays, birthday, teacher appreciation week, general thank yous, etc.). It got old real fast so now we only send something if I have anything in my Venmo balance and even then I limit it to $10. Just this last week she was putting together a "Teacher Appreciation Day" gift (after already organizing some $600 worth of gifts for her birthday last month), so I contributed $4.87... which was my Venmo balance that day. Maybe she'll finally take me off the mailing list.

Excited to share this new Unum Chat (UNUM Ken Burns) with the great writer Erik Larson about his new book, The Demon of Unrest. One of the country's greatest storytellers takes us from Lincoln's election to the onset on the Civil War, a critical moment in our country's history. Take a look.

My daughter just figured out that you can get to the town 26 miles away with out getting on the interstate/freeway. She gets her geographical awareness from her mother.

Edit: she's 18 and has been driving for a year or more now.

My oldest came down with strep throat probably sometime over the weekend and was miserable all day Sunday and Monday. Monday evening she began antibiotics and by yesterday morning (before even having her 2nd dose) she was feeling 110% better. Amazing what medicine can do!

The antibiotics may have just been reinforcements to an already-mobilized immune system that had fought the infection to a standstill.

Make sure you take care of the low hanging fruit - that will show progress.
I'll ping you later, but before we do a deep dive I gotta hop on a call.
Alright then everyone, just keep the core value in mind. We need some sizzle on this project! Sizzle! LP's hard stop isn't going to hard stop itself! Dammit! it's already passed!!!!

All this lingo talk made me think of the Blazing Saddles scene
Hedley Lamarr: My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Taggart: God darnit, Mr. Lamarr, you use your tongue prettier than a twenty dollar whore.

Losing LP's input this morning is definitely a pain point, but the loss of our ninja doesn't mean we have to park it. Let's move the goalposts in the short term and just shoot for a one-pager until we all can reconvene.
