About The Town
The Town of Collierville has all the amenities and services of a large metropolitan area successfully blended with historic charm and character. Through many years of visionary planning, Collierville has grown to be known as one of the most desirable communities in the nation to live, work, and learn. Because of this, we are very careful in selecting exceptional individuals to become part of our team. We provide amazing benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance, Town provided life and long-term disability insurance, paid time off, pension, and more!
What’s The Role?
Working as a Planner, you can expect to play a key role in shaping the growth and development of the Town by reviewing and preparing detailed reports on zoning change requests, zoning variances, and proposed ordinances related to planning matters. You’ll conduct field studies and site surveys—often traveling to undeveloped properties—to gather original research data for planning projects, as well as research land use issues and develop strategies to address them. In this role, you’ll also take on special projects, collect and analyze housing, population, and construction data to support planning studies and policy recommendations. You’ll compile information and prepare background materials for agenda items reviewed by the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Historic District Commission, and Design Review Commission. During public meetings, you’ll provide technical staff support and may meet with citizens, developers, design professionals, and community groups to present planning information, regulatory requirements, and updates on pending applications. Additionally, you’ll guide applicants through the development review process—explaining ordinances, procedures, and submittal requirements—and regularly report to the Assistant Town Planner and other Town officials on the progress and status of ongoing planning projects and initiatives.
Why Join the Planning Division in Collierville Now?
As of January 2025, Collierville has a new mayor and several new Board members. They funded an update to the Town’s Land Use Plan (into a full Comprehensive Plan) over the next 18 months with the help of an outside consultant. The consultant will be selected this fall. This will likely be followed by a new Zoning Ordinance. All Planning Division staff will patriciate in these projects and gain invaluable experience (and flex their planning skills). We began using public education/engagement tools in 2025 with planner-friendly software such as ERSI’s Storymap. Our Board implemented a new “career ladder” program on 7/1/25 so entry level staff have opportunities for growth within the organization.
