Growing up in a city that was 99.9999% Catholic, the Mary Something names seemed to evoke a greater sense of purity than other women's names; Mary Beth, Mary Ann, Mary Alice, Mary Louise, Mary Grace, and so on. Following behind that were the Ann Something and Something Ann names.

Based on his list, one gets the impression Dan views Scandinavian/Germanic culture as being the most masculine on earth. Sure we're talking about descendents of the vikings, but nowadays the region appeals to different sensibilities and values.

Please let's not forget Bubba.

With the takeover of boys' names by girls over the past 20 years soon all the names mentioned in Dan's list will soon be girls' names too.

Very masculine: Jasper, Thor, Dirk, Seamus, Rod, and Jack

Very feminine: Kate or any girl's name that is also the name of a flower or a positive human characteristic (Faith, Prudence, etc.)
