I'm guessing you read MOST of the book because George never finished the damn series like his first series. Still waiting George.
This series is based on Blood and Fire. It is basically a history of the Tagaryans and reads like one.

Any one watch House of the Dragon last night? I downloaded it, but haven't watched it yet. I have read a good chunk of the book it is based on and the book doesn't seem like it would lend itself well to a TV series. Guess we will see. People loved the dragons, so I guess it has that going for it. LOTS of dragons.

I watched it and really enjoyed it. I've read all the Song of Fire and Ice books and bits of other related Martin stuff but haven't read Blood and Fire.

From what I remember, the Targaryen backstory was really spread out from the time of the Doom of Valyria until Robert's Rebellion (time-wise). From yesterday's episode and the short little preview of the rest of the season, it looks like they might be compressing some of that history all into this current timeline (which is supposed to be 172 years before Dany was born). We'll see how it works out but so far I'm into it.

I'll get to watching that and She Hulk and the new lord of the rings thing on Amazon just as soon as I'm done with Orville.

We finished Season 3 of For All Mankind, thinking it was the series end. Nope, turns out there's another season coming - next year.

Finished The Terminal List. Dark and broody, but I was able to get through it by not bingeing. There are more books in the series, but I don't know if they're going to turn those into series as well.

I didn't watch GoT, but told Hubby I would at least start HotD. Maybe we'll start that this week.

I have been watching classic movies on HBO Max that I have never seen. Last night it was Chinatown with Jack Nicholson. Great well made movie, but holy hell what a depressing ending.

I was home yesterday morning and I turned on The Sandman since I was up so early. In the middle of the first episode, the electricity blipped and the TV shut off. GRRR!

Keep watching, it is great! Also, there is an 11th bonus episode. Great stuff!

I finished Sandman while I was out with Covid. I thought it was really good. I'm watching Kleo on Netflix right now. I've liked it so far. I'm a sucker for a good cold war story.

I read the series of books that the show is, at time loosely, based on. It's interesting learning about that time in English history. I got tired of the show and gave up on it.
Interestingly, I picked up the first book in the series, got tired of it, and gave up on it.

I think you have to be a fan of that author. I liked the earlier books in the series better. The later ones in the series, not so much. This Sharp's series were pretty good. Outside of these series, I don't really care for him.

Been watching Hard Knocks on HBO Max, the episodes featuring the Detroit Lions.

I am not impressed.

I had thought that by the time football players made it to the professional level, that innate motivation was a component of player success and that coaches could rely on those inner sparks for the most part. Uhh.... based on the way the coaches verbalized their utterances to players, it seemed apparent to me that coaches assume players do not have innate motivation.

Also, it was weird to witness a player, while in the middle of a team huddle, ah, umm, vocalize and yell motivational sayings. I say "weird" because the vocalizations didn't seem on point as they were laden with distracting f-bombs, which, by my way of thinking, rendered said words as lacking any motivating spirit. At best, and I am trying to find a silver lining here, the player's sayings seemed akin to our church friends that stand in the back behind the pews, genuflecting and "speaking in tongues".

I said as much to my 13-year-old son, as we were watching this together. He said to me, "Dad! You have to understand, Dan Campbell is a different kind of coach. The players love him!" We'll see... we will see.

I'll have to watch the bonus Sandman. For now I'm getting the Game of Thrones boobfest and SheHulk.

I see they've taken Death In Paradise off (free) streaming. Now I can't watch the most recent season. As a substitute, we've been watching Shakespeare & Hathaway.

My daughter and I started She Hulk the other day and really liked the first episode. We were all set to watch the second episode last night but we lost power. She wanted to stream it on her phone but I convinced her to wait until we could watch it on the TV.

Maybe it's a generational thing but she has no problem watching a show, or even a movie, on a small phone screen. My focus maxes out at the duration of a music video.

Started on Lodge 49 last night on Hulu.

I'm digging it, so far.
Meh. Got through most of season 1 and 'get it' now. Not compelling enough to finish season 1 and watch season 2.

Watched Epi 1 & 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime. Very good for Tolkien fans, but I think it is also accessible enough for newbies too, (though, to be honest, I have a hard time conceptualizing the reality of "LOTR newbies" at this point in pop culture history).

Saw the series finale for In The Dark and even though I knew things wouldn't end well, I didn't think it would be like that - don't want to spoil it - it was a good show so I do still recommend it even if it's the CW lol

The White Lotus is a hoot!

We are loving it, and are able to agree on almost nothing (see list below) and still enjoy watching together.

-there's a body in the first episode. Who is it?
-will she or won't she?
-Will he or won't he?
-who is that masked man?
-family drama - who is the root cause?
-Is room 1 or room 2 the better suite?
-Did the MIL really just do that??

Yes I am psyched for the next season - like an updated Fantasy Island with a twist

White Lotus was fun. Definitely keeps you guessing!

We are watching Blackbird, Reservation Dogs, House of Dragons, and LOTR.

I'm working on House of Dragons and She-Hulk. Just finished Locke and Key. I guess Netflix is the only one who remembers what binging is.

There's a new show on Hulu called "Reboot" about the reboot of a fictional early '00s family sitcom staring Keegan-Michael Key, Judy Greer (both Metro Detroit natives!), and Johnny Knoxville. Throw in Rachel Bloom, Paul Riser, and Kerri Kenney-Silver and so far the first three episodes are hilarious.

I like the premise you describe and will check it out. Also, please sign me up for your newsletter.

The Handmaid's Tale new season (5) started up and it's off to a running start. Next season will be it's last which I think is good look for the show.

You can't really binge this but Ken Burns' new series The U.S. and the Holocaust is excellent. It deftly explores the intersections of American racism, antisemitism, and xenophobia with the Holocaust. If you want a deeper dive of American racism as the model for Nazism, I highly suggest reading Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent by Isabel Wilkerson. It really should be essential reading for all college students.

I want to see this badly. There's no such thing as bad ken Burns documentaries, only good or great. Talk about being timely. I think Burns - whose documentaries always focus on America - knows the country is in trouble now and he has tried to present a narrative of events, or perhaps even an historic cautionary tale, to try to get Americans to take a step back and think objectively for a moment.

But, but...CRT...waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

;)

Sadly, I think we are past that point.

plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose (effectively....the more things change, the more they stay the same)
Basically. Just because there's a veneer of politeness in some quarters doesn't mean the underlying sentiments have changed.

I've been enjoying the new Beavis & Butt-Head on Paramount+. Just saw an episode where the boys were watching a video of a girl eating a fuckton of fast food burgers. I found her YouTube channel, and all I can say is BAAAAAARF! She's gonna have a fuckton of sharts! I can't stand binge eating!

I've never understood the fascination of that. You see that as well with the heroic eating competitions.

Right now we're enjoying Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime.

For sure!
