I just finished the last season of Black Sails and I highly recommend... lots of sword fighting, drama, sex, fancy pirate ships, hot pirates (and some gross toothless ones too of course)... Lots of fun and great storylines.

Wife and I watched all 3 seasons (so far) of The Last Kingdom. If you like dramatized historical shows a la "Outlander" set in Medieval period you will like it (no time travel, though). It follows the attempted Dane/Viking conquest of Great Britain and how the Saxons battled them back led by Alfred the Great (with a help of a fictionalized Saxon turned Dane who was betrayed). A little Game of Thronesy, too (sex and violence). Plus, it has Vikings. I rate it 4/5.

We also watched the third season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Now we are working our way through The Office. I've never binged the whole series before. We're halfway through Season 3 now, when Stamford merges into the Scranton branch. Still love it.

It's based on a series of books by Bernard Cornwell, that I have read. I saw the first season and downloaded two episodes of the second season.

Just started watching House of Cards this week. Dayum, it's well made. Spacey is an amazing actor and the writing is as good as any I've ever seen on television. The show compares favorably to Aaron Sorkin's early season 'West Wing' episodes.

I'm frequently years behind the curve when it comes to 'discovering' things that are already popular, and 'Cards' is no exception. One of these days I may have to watch 'Game of Thrones' or even 'Deadwood'

Cowboy Bebop was interesting and a bit disturbing. Different set of cultural norms over there.8-!:-c

Errrrrrrr-this is a family show and I'll leave it at that.8-!

I'm not seeing what you are I guess. I haven't finished the series, I'm on the last 2 episodes, but I haven't seen anything "family" related if I get your drift. There is apparently a live action adaption coming out.

Meant to say that it isn't a family show and I didn't want to get to the reasons why on this website that's all. Sorry for the lack of clarity.

OHHHH. I totally thought you meant there was some weird twist that had some brother/sister love or something wild like that. I dunno, it's definitely not a family show, but it's not what I would call "bad". There's much worse on regular cable today.

That is true. I would second that it's not a bad show. It's just definitely adult entertainment.

I think when we finish season 5 of House of Cards we're going to start 'Downton Abbey' (or as my neighbor habitually refers to it - 'Downtown Abbey'

I started watching this show with my kids in 2012 when my daughter was 12. I got into the show after watching an episode on TV (The episode when they go to abandoned earth to retrieve an old Betamax player). So I got it from the library and started watching it from the beginning.

Some episodes were perfectly fine for them to see (such as when they first get Ein) but others contained violent, disturbing content without warning. Overall I thought it was a pretty good show, but we never did finish the series. I think we got about halfway through.

Season 5 of Orphan Black!

Also watching American Gods. I recently read the book (really, really enjoyed it) and the TV show tracks along nicely.

And just finished re-watching season 6 of Game of Thrones so that I can be prepared for the new season.

We started watching GLOW on NetFlix a couple days ago and are about 5 or 6 episodes in and I am loving it. My wife is tolerating it.

I vaguely remember watching the actual GLOW wrestling show back in the '80s and as much of a fan of WWF that I was I knew GLOW was something different and extra cheesy. None of us (me, my brothers, and sisters who all loved WWF) thought GLOW was any good. It was just cringe-worthy. The NetFlix show is just as cringe-worthy, but in a good way. Marc Maron and Alison Brie are both great but the side characters are what makes it fun, especially Britney Young (Machu Picchu), Gayle Rankin (Sheila the She-Wolf), and Sunita Mani (Beirut the Mad Bomber).

Glow was decent. I liked the concept of taking a bad '80s wrestling show and fictionalizing stories for the ladies. Every show leaves you with a mini cliff hanger until the last one which leaves you with a couple stories waiting to be told next seasion.

I wasn't going to watch the final season Orphan Black. After a rough asthma day Friday, I just went home and chilled. I ended up watching the first 3-4 episodes and will probably finish it. So far, it's one of the better season.

One of my sisters has been trying to plan a family photo with our parents, all of us kids and wives/husbands, and all of the grandkids (with about 30 of us, it can be a hassle trying to find an opportunity that works for everybody) and she had finally settled on this Sunday afternoon but then one of my brothers backed out because he has a long drive (which is true) and has to be home in time to finish re-watching last season and the Game of Thrones premiere Sunday evening. :lmao:

I cannot say I'm really sad that the photo has been postponed and I cannot say I don't agree with the reason for postponing it.

Been watching Always Sunny in Philadelphia on Netflix. I've seen a lot of episodes already, but it's definitely worth watching again. Hilarious show.

I binged the 4th season of Silicon Valley over the weekend too. That show is so great.

One episode left in season one of Strike Back, should be able to start season two tonight...

Hasn't been my favorite season of it - I'm probably just irritated that this is the last season of Orphan Black.

Always Sunny is one of my go-to shows for when I don't have anything new I want to watch but also don't feel like getting off the couch. It's one of the few shows I can watch over and over again. There are some episodes that I've probably watched close to a dozen times because I enjoy them that much.

So far, it's been about tying up loose ends and advancing the mythology. Hopefully, they will give us a satisfactory close.

Yeah it's a bit farfetched now but I'm still going to miss the sestras / clone club when it's over.

Started bingeing on Downton Abbey and the writing up to the end of season 1 so far has been exemplary. I hope they maintain that quality throughout the entire show's run.

I didn't realize it at the time, but the show is based on the Robert Altman film "Gosford Park" (which also starred Maggie Smith). I pulled out my VHS copy of that film and discovered the tape had been entirely erased.:-|

I'm getting the 30 day free Hulu thing so I'm binging on Battlestar Galactica. I think I'll hit up some Vikings and Hand Maid's Tale. Anything else?

BSG is one of my favorite shows from the last 10 years. Really good stuff.

On a related topic, it's always interesting to rewatch a series after 5-10 years. I am rewatching Weeds and it reads quite differently in 2017 than it did in 2005. First of all, things like same sex marriage and legalized recreational marijuana make the show seem dated. Second, their take on GWB seems quaint in the Trump era.

On the substance of the series, it's so great for 2 seasons and then it takes a turn into a weird place that some people must love, but I didn't.

Finished Father Brown, on to Shetland. Have to admit, I have some difficulty with the strong accents for some of the actors. But it does make me pay attention . . .

My wife started watching Rake and she loves it. Compares it to House, but with a lawyer.

I have moderate hearing loss. I usually watch shows with the closed captioning on and that effectively deals with any strong accents. Mrs. Maister has gotten so used to having the CC on that I notice she watches shows with it on even when I'm not watching with her.

So we're almost done with Shetland. What a great show. I like how the character Jimmy Perez defies the usual genius investigative mastermind trope. He has none of the ego associated with a Sherlock Holms or a Hercule Poirot, and he's not wily like a Lt. Columbo who lures you into underestimating him. He's bright, devoted, and has good instincts.

What I like most about the show, though, has more to do with how much one learns about the climate, culture, and people that live on those remote islands in the inhospitable North Sea.

Watched all of the first four seasons. This is so not "great" television, but it definitely was a fun show to watch.

Episode 8 was freaking great (clone swap!), and I'm good with how the season/series ended.

Yes! What a great show - I think there will be another season too!

Yeah, that's too bad. I've heard all the books the series is based on. I've also been watching the series. I understand the finale is one ended and there might be a movie.

Found out that there is a new season of Face/Off. I started watching it last night.

Finally finished with the entire The Office series a couple weeks back. After that rolled into Sneaky Pete (on Amazon Prime). Nice change of pace, and love me some Bryan Cranston and Giovanni Ribisi. Finished that show in a week as there's only one season of 10 episodes so far. I hear they are working on the second season now.

The 4th season of Bojack Horseman was released Friday. I'm about halfway through and it's fantastic. Just as awesome as the first three seasons (so far, the 3rd season is my absolute favorite).

[4:03PM] Yes, I'm through S4:E9. Fantastic. E9 is especially good.

[10:12PM] ...and S4:E11......:'(

[10:42PM] Okay, I'm telling you now: If you haven't been watching BoJack Horseman, you need to. It superficially will drill a hole all the way into your soul.

Not sure how else to describe it.

It's gonna be hell waiting for Season 5.

Is it a comedy? Drama? What's the premise?

Is it a comedy? Drama? What's the premise?

I think I would describe it as an absurdist dark comedy.

The premise is that Bojack is a horse who was in a sitcom in the 1990s where he was a single dad raising three kids. He's been basically resting on his laurels since then and the show's 1st season starts off with him trying to navigate his slacker life in Hollywood while trying to get back into more serious acting. The show follows the various ups and downs (and downs, and downs, and downs...) from there.

I might also add that in the world of this show, anthropomorphic animals are normal, so having a horse star in a TV series in a human part is not necessarily odd. There's a lot of social commentary, pop culture references, and while it's basically typical adult humor, the show delves into some very deep subjects. After Season 3 I thought perhaps the series was played out; I couldn't imagine where else it would go, but then Season 4 was even better and went even deeper.

I've heard the Bojack character described as someone that everyone can understand or sympathize with but no one would want to be. They do a good job of putting him in circumstances where he makes the worst possible choices, yet on some level you can see why he does it; we've all had those moments.

The writing is amazing, not just the story lines, but the banter, the puns, the takeoffs (there is a magazine called Manatee Fair that is a parody of Vanity Fair; they do a lot of stuff like that with the animals.) Lots of wordplay. It's the kind of show you can rewatch to catch thing things you missed the first time (I used the 10 second rewind button quite a bit).

Note that there are adult situations; I would not watch this with kids (maybe high school, but be prepared to do some 'splainin').

Oh, and the clip above is for his "old show", and is purposely cheesy.

I love Horsin' Around and think it's the perfect riff on cheesy late '80s and '90s ABC TGIF stuff like Perfect Strangers and Full House and Family Matters. I keep hoping they'll do a season arc that includes a few full length episodes of Horsin' Around or maybe secretly drop them into Netflix to be found on their own.

I definitely think the show is at its best when it's being serious (is it cheesy to say "touching"?) but still works in a couple great puns or pop culture references or an instance of Bojack making the obviously most self-centered decision possible regardless of how it affects others.

I agree about the show being re-watchable too. I think I've watched the first two seasons 3 or 4 times and the the 3rd season a couple times (I was trying to get through it again before the 4th season dropped but didn't quite get to it).

Have you seen the Horsin' Around Christmas Episode?

Also: Pay attention to Diane's ringtones. Great running joke.

I've tried watching it a few times and just can't get into it. I usually like shows like this, but I dunno why but I don't really care for it. Maybe I need to watch a few more episodes?

Comedy Central has been airing a basically non-stop marathon of South Park in preparation for the 21st season premiere tonight. I've been watching that for the past week or so. I forget how freaking good that show really is.
