Keith Knight is the artist behind The K Chronicles. (A favorite strip of mine!) One of his regular features is Life's Little Victories. Keef defines Life's Little Victories as: "tiny little daily occurances that make one quietly say "YES!!"

Have you experience any of Life's Little Victories Lately?

I had one this morning: I pulled off a perfect parallel parking maneuver. On the first try. With two cars waiting. - YES!! :D

It may sound petty, but my most recurring little victory is getting the kids in bed by 9 so I can have a cigar.:)

Hooray! I managed to get a barely adequate night's sleep. I'm not completely exhausted this morning!

I was just completely surprised by a letter from the bank saying that I paid off a loan. Not the mortgage or anything but a nice surprise.

I cut the cheese in an elevator when no one else was on and managed to exit before anyone else entered!

Now if that isn't one of life's little victories I don't know what is.

City manager gave me an actual gold star in the weekly department heads' meeting for my presentation at the last city council meeting.

Our nights have been unusually cool and Mrs. Cardinal is out of town. I have a very sweet and warm husky/collie who likes to lay in bed all night stretched out with her back pressed up against me.

Yay, I just submitted a staff report and it was accepted without a single red pen mark.

I spent only about half an hour snowblowing yesterday ... and this morning I walked the dog around the block in my ducks not my snow boots!!! YYYYEEEHHHAAAWWWW!

Oh, yeah, and the ice that prevented the left garage door from opening all the way has apparently melted so now it works normally. Never fear, though, more snow, wind, and frigid temps are blowing in from points West and Northwest. :-c

I had a busy morning, rushing from one meeting to the next. Lunchtime rolls around, and I got to use the microwave without having to wait in line! <:D And what's even better, no one had used it yet to cook something stinky! +o(

I can relate. My "3 dog night" is now a "2.5 dog night" though. The Husky isn't well.

Today's small victories:

I convinced my shy, apprehensive 9 year old to take Aikido lessons.

The wife and I managed to arrange for a night out without the children.

Its Friday and I'm still alive...

I finally worked out how the sew the piping on the pockets of a cape i am making- it just took me several evenings this week and all Friday :(

And the cape is still in one piece after i threw it violently around the house when i couldn't do the piping :-$

I came in to work fully prepared to send someone packing and was told to back off.

Victory for them, more hassle for me.

I don't know if it's a victory or not, but I'm still working here. More layoffs are rumored around the corner.

My usually out to lunch supervisor came around and said she was sorry for taking her frustration this week out on me. These are few and far between.

Blizzard Conditions

This happened year's ago, but it strill brings a smile to my ole' face.....

I was driving my 4WD truck on U.S. 20, a few miles outside of Perrysburg, OH. Near-blizzard conditions prevailed, with blowing snow making visibility very challenging. The road conditions were, due to the rain that had changed to ice, quite poor. Being the conservative dude that this Bear is, I motored toward Perrysburg at a relatively slow....but safe.....pace. Not too slow......just enough to make sure a skid didn't send me into a utility pole or, even worse, across the median strip and into the path of the vehicles going the other direction.

Behind me a giant 4WD truck, much bigger than mine ("Mine's bigger than your's!), roared up to my tail. We were not yet at the point where the highway changed from 2-lane to 4-lane. The impatient idiot flashed his lights and kept blowing his obnoxious horn. What the hexx did he want me to do......go off road to make room for him? Moron.

Finally the 4-lane portion was available and he roared past me, flipping me off as he sped past.

A mile later I motored past the idiot moron. He was standing in the median, looking at his upside-down 4WD truck. I beeped, waved, and smiled as I slowly drove past the chump.

Yes!

That is what you call Karma in action!!!

I just now found a 7-year old cross-access easement agreement that I needed!! Usually these things get filed and are never seen again. :D

btrage, winning

I recently won a two hour long battle for the center armrest for the center seat of an airplane. It felt glorious! I almost started chanting, "USA! USA!" upon my victory!
That's not a battle. The middle seat gets the armrest. Everyone knows this. And for those that don't I would have imposed my will upon them on takeoff.

While walking my (usually very reactive) dog, two dogs got away from their owners and came charging at us, barking and growling. As they came in, my dog reacted in kind.... at first. But by the time the owners got to me, all three dogs were ears up, tails up, and sniffing butts. This all happened in about 5-10 seconds. It was nice to not have to deploy the pepper spray.

I gotta ask, how many times have your dogs "gotten away from you" while on a walk? Personally, that number would be zero for me and I strongly suspect the same would be true of you. Which invites immediate judgment of the apparently negligent owner of those two dogs. I'm glad it turned out to have a not horrible ending, but that encounter could easily have turned out quite differently. The gods of fortune were with you both that day.

Twice actually. It happens.

The first time was when we first moved in and we had contractors in and out and one left the door open. We're a block away from a freeway access road and by the time we noticed she was missing, she was already out of sight around the corner on the access road. We called (and the contractor whistled... louder than I know how to) and she came back round the corner.

The second time she happened to pull as I was repositioning the leash in my hand and got away. She ran off about 150-200 feet away, but with calling she came back.

In this case, I believe the couple had just arrived home and were taking their dogs out of the car and into the house and it was just bad timing of us coming by. They both (the owners) responded within seconds. That kind of thing used to get me really upset but I think that feeds into my dog's reactiveness. I've been trying not to get too freaked out when other dogs approach.

Also, there are several people in the neighborhood that I've met while they were walking their dogs and she's gotten friendly with 4 or 5 of the dogs. She will even want to walk to the house where one of them lives because she likes walking with the other dog.

She used to pull hard on the leash all the time but as she's gotten older she's mellowed. I think she also pulled more when walking with multiple dogs. Since my other dog passed last summer, it's usually just me and her now and she doesn't pull as much.

Teaching my now mostly deaf dog sign language to go outside. There is no CSL - canine sign language - so I made up a sign. Trying the same with her name. If I yell, she can somewhat still hear.
