Daily things 5️⃣ Five Things Friday

I like T Williams but my favorite story about family obligations is the one by the Colombian great, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, called "Chronicle of a Death Foretold", about two brothers driven by family honor to kill one they suspect has robbed their sister of her maidenhood.

1) Rainy day before a long weekend.

2) Not much going on right now, or even over the long weekend.

3) Not the only person in the office, but might as well be given how spread out we are.

4) Cleaned house during the week for a visit by a member of Hubby's family. We will see how long the neatness lasts.

5) One last call this afternoon, then I'm heading out.

1. Looking forward to the lake tomorrow
2. Public hearing scheduled for Tuesday night meeting - all notices & advertisements have been out - client requests it get pulled from the agenda because they haven't completed an option on one of the parcels (although we have an affidavit from those property owners to proceed). This is the 2nd time.
3. It's amazing to me that some people actually think development deals are quick and easy
4. Enjoying the cooler (albeit slightly) weather, but that also me I'll be trimming up lots of landscaping next month or so
5. Charleston trip may be resurrected but its shaky right now at best.

1. Had Jaipur Vegetables for lunch
2. 101* this Sat-Wed...this is September!
3. Got a special package coming to me from Ponchatoula, LA
4. Should be a longer weekend (have to work Tuesday/CC meeting; 4/10 schedule Labor Day off will have to be Wednesday)
5. Will I regret #1?

1. Going to see my son at Eastern Michigan U tonight.
2. Going to see Eastern vs. Eastern football.
3. Running 10 miles tomorrow.
4. Smoking a pork loin tomorrow.
5. Nothing else planned this weekend yet.

1) I have been away from Cyburbia for a few weeks dealing with an issue at home. Things are finally starting to make little incremental improvements, but has been extraordinarily difficult on our family. It has caused me to reconsider the distance we live from extended family.
2) Due to the issue referenced in #1, we have no plans for the weekend and have been just taking things a day at a time. Having said that, I do intend to go to the gym each morning before anyone gets up to help with stress reduction.
3) Last Friday when I got home from work, I discovered that our AC was not working. We were able to get it fixed this week, but the repair cost was double our monthly mortgage payment. But AC here is a necessity.
4) Oldest is in a drama class this fall. I asked him what about drama he likes so much and he said it was performing. He told me that we are not like other people in that we are not scared to speak in front of a crowd. I looked at him with an inquisitive look for a bit, and he told me that he sees me doing presentations at council meetings (I re-watch them a few days later on line to see how I can improve and take notes on responses, and he is often on the gaming council in the same room), and he wants to be able to do that too. Makes me worried that he thinks I am acting.
5) I think it is time to leave and stop off at the store to pick up hamburgers and fries to cook for dinner tonight.

1. The street concert the city (well main street office) had last night went off well with good weather & 80s music. My finger is a little sore from opening cans @ the beer sales tent.
2. Oktoberfest beers are 10x better than pumpkin beers!
3. Addressing & city jurisdictional lines are very different - even though your address has a certain city's name, it does not mean you live in the city (& you're not my problem).
4. Looks like the weather will wash out the weekend.
5. Employee Appreciation lunch today - come get pizza.

1) Promo paperwork submitted for one of my peeps!

2) Meeting with agency attorney later today to discuss amending a closed contract to say that it's closed.

3) Some entities need less red tape (see #2).

4) Not a big weekend for plans. Hubby will be watching football. I'll be . . . doing something else.

5) My sister arrives next week! :)

  • Employee appreciation lunch today at a local park
  • Beautiful/perfect late summer weather too
  • Planning to sell some junk jewelry for metal value
  • Been listening to 'vintage' Weird Al (1992 and 2006 vintages)
  • Every day is today. Yesterday is a myth and tomorrow an illusion

  1. Clouds are rolling in, finally getting some rain after a week of 90+ degree weather
  2. Debating if this weekend is too early to put up fall decor, but I really want to
  3. My cat is obsessed with "cat tv" YouTube videos and I have to put them on when I WFH or she sits on my keyboard...
  4. A resident gave me a gift of micro plums from his trees after I approved his permit. They're like the size of grapes!
  5. Getting a garage fridge delivered, can finally be "super middle class" and have a fridge just for drinks/extra frozen stuff from Costco!

"super middle class"
That is the excellent!

Friday update...
1. No harm
2. Cool-down is on the horizon...85 today...mid 70s by next Tuesday
3. Package arrived...nice
4. Three-day weekends and two days in office a week is a nice benefit
5. No

1. I'm headed on a trip with 31 of my closest friends.
2. I know two men named Hansel.
3. I'm skipping a family wedding this weekend and am taking grief for it.
4. Sadly some of my friends are more like family than my family is.
5. I really enjoy learning to play the mandolin.

4. Sadly some of my friends are more like family than my family is.
I don't think you need to be sad about that. I mean just because you share an accident of biology doesn't mean you are going to be best buddies with everybody in your family.

It is sad. They're my siblings. I love them but have been let down, especially by one of my sisters, who happens to be the one who tries to lecture me about being more a part of the family.

1) It has been a long, stressful, and difficult week and I am so ready for the weekend.
2) We told our oldest that a friend of his can stay over on Saturday if he wants. Given what happened this week, I think it would be good for him and and his friends to spend some time having fun and being kids.
3) The HOA manager for the neighborhood that I live in is avoiding my e-mails and phone calls. I think I will stop in next week.
4) I am so disappointed with the direction this country is going right now on so many levels.
5) Last weekend I marked some new garden beds that I will put in later this fall and ordered 12 bare root shrubs that will be delivered in mid November or early December. Around the same time I am going to transplant several things that I have and the overall structure of my landscape will be good for the big stuff and the perimeter of our backyard will be established. It will take some time before things fill in and all the plantings are in place to create adequate privacy, but I am already pleased with the structure.

1) bad blood test results recently have prompted me to lose weight. Again.
2) I'm hoping our bush beans start producing pretty soon. The daytime highs are now in the 70s and the nightly lows in the 50's
3) Cat's away
4) Junior seems to be doing slightly better with online school than he did with in-person last semester. We'll take the win.
5) Someone brought in mystery coffee. Not sure how I feel about mystery food and drink

1 - Going to see Little Feat tonight in the big city down the road
2 - I hoping this present trend @ work continues
3 - The leftover chicken curry last night was not as spicy as when we first ate it on Monday, thought it would be spicier
4 - Did not go to Charleston last weekend & was sorta okay with it since it rained, but it was disappointing
5 - Debating about purchasing an electric bike, I don't use my bike here very much because of the hills & maybe I'd use that more.

1. Special package that arrived last week must go back to the factory - left without a crown
2. Interesting thunderstorm last night - 10 to 15 minutes of continuous rumbling and lightning, sat out on my covered patio taking it in
3. Planning on a 200 s.f. sod/patch replacement this weekend
4. Went to watch the Kokanee run/spawn last week...crickets...too warm
5. Mom's GFR is up from 33 to 37, should be able to see her in a few weeks

1) I have already put in over 70 hours of work so far this week and have a long to-do list of things to accomplish before I leave today.
2) Yesterday I learned that the local school system is going to start working with 5th graders to help them pick career paths. That seems way too early.
3) I am going to try out a new propagation system. The last one had a 50% success rate. I am really amazed by the number of youtube videos and online blogs with suggestions and tips. This one include putting sand and gravel at the bottom of a clear plastic storage bin with a lid, adding water to it but low enough that the pots won't sit in water, and then once you put your pots in it and snap the lid back on, putting it on the north side of a structure. The residual moisture at the bottom will create 100% humidly. Instead of regular pots I am using red solo-cups that I drilled drainage holes in and using a mixture of vermiculite, perlite, and sawdust. This batch will be Cherry Laurel, Azaleas, and Butterfly Bushes.
4) Youngest is having a birthday come up and wife wants to know what the budget is for gifts. The party is already costing us $200, but at least it is not at our house.

1 - I'm the only one in the office today so maybe I need to do a few site inspection
2 - No, this is not the department to place a noise complaint as we do not work @ 1:00 am
3 - I can not find my checkbook
4 - I need new tires for the car but now I'm scared to buy new ones based on what happened to MDPlanner
5 - Mom has bought furniture for her new place up here in NC so it looks like its going to happen now.

1) After a really bad yesterday, am feeling at least human today.

2) Yesterday was the last day of paxlovid. I'm not sure taking it was in my best interest.

3) Because of covid, I missed out on a couple of family events last weekend. However, I know I did the right thing by staying home.

4) Hubby is completely over me being sick and is constantly making comments about getting better, feeling better, and getting back to work. I want to deck him but don't have the energy.

5) There will be naps in my future today and over the weekend.

1. As noted in another thread, serious car repair issues. Ugh.
2. The weather is awesome, the humidity had dropped.
3. Having a low country boil/tailgatge for employees at lunch today. Everyone is wearing their favorite college gear.
4. My nails seem to grow very fast.
5. In addition to all my other duties, guess who just got named Interim Public Works Director? :grimace:

Getting new tires on the car today - good timing huh
Looking at pictures from SW Florida - remembering I used to live there & drove over the Sanibel causeway many times
I left the house this morning, got 3 blocks down the road & turned around - I forgot my rain jacket
A friend of ours father went into hospice this week - he's been insistent about staying at home but this is better for all
I've worked here for about 8 years - I had my 2nd face-to-face performance evaluation Wednesday

1. When I make popcorn I frequently eat a few handfuls that evening but save the balance to eat the next morning
2. I shore do like popcorn
3. Except for a handful of green peppers and cherry tomatoes to harvest, and the three rutabagas, this gardening season has wound down
4. Lots of troubles with Junior these days. He's a troubled adolescent.
5. No real plans for this weekend. Which means I'll probably be expected to spend much of it cleaning around the house

1) Having occasional freakouts over my most-likely-but-not-yet-confirmed CSF leak into my sinus cavity :omg:

2) Hubby refuses to think about what-if so he won't freak out. I prefer to have the info and be able to get prepared for the worst.

3) Both parental units are handling it OK but in their different ways. Dad got me on the prayer list at his assisted living facility, and mom has dug into the research and is ready to consult with the specialist.

4) Need to call my GP and get my Xanax prescription refilled. I'm going to need it!

5) CT scan next week to confirm 1) CSF leak 2) Location 3) Possible surgical options.

2) Hubby refuses to think about what-if so he won't freak out. I prefer to have the info and be able to get prepared for the worst.
Are you by chance prone to catastrophizing? If so, 'preparation' may in fact be counterproductive and even harmful to one's emotional well-being. I recommend crossing the medical decision bridge when it's clear you have to and not before.

^^ I'm more like my mom - get your ducks in a row and be able to go into the issue/problem/etc with a clear mind, and not worry about the little things while dealing with the issue.

Makes recovery easier. And for me, it also means having a stocked freezer because Hubby can't cook.

1. Very minimal impacts here, leaving the EOC at 3.
2. Just gutted seeing the pictures from Sanibel. Been going there all my life and when I was young for several weeks at a time. Was planning to go for a long weekend in November. :(
3. Picking up a new vehicle today. Bummed I had to do it but excited too. I'm paying below MSRP so in this auto buying climate I consider that a big win.
4. Positive thoughts your way Salmissra.
5. Sometimes I wish I would have become a fireman. Those guys cook up some serious eats!

4. Lots of troubles with Junior these days. He's a troubled adolescent.
5. No real plans for this weekend. Which means I'll probably be expected to spend much of it cleaning around the house
Has anybody read Junior the riot act? He could spend the weekend alongside his father cleaning around the house.

A. The parking lot is empty today.
B. One guy here is retiring after 37 years and another is leaving to go to a big engineering firm down the street.
C. Boss has also left for the day.
D. Considering RJing out, myself.
E. It's cold here.

Alpha: Installing shoe molding tomorrow in the dining room. I've never done it before, so figured I'd do an easy room first to get the hang of it.
Bravo: Need to get back in touch with my Argentine cousin. Thankfully, he says he's good at "asymmetric" conversation.
Charlie: Our harvest festival begins tomorrow. Those folks act like they own the city for two weeks. In fact, they practically do own it ...
Delta: I've been through one hurricane and it was relatively mild. I'd never do that again. Stay safe everybody in Ian's way.
Echo: Sending positive vibes and good mojo to @Salmissra

Use some of the scraps so you can practice coping the joints instead of just mitering them. It looks so much better and you'll feel good about it. There are lots of videos on YouTube that can help you get the hang of it.

1) My youngest is very shy and tends to hide behind me when I go to introduce him to people. Last night all the classes in his grade had a concert. Not only was he the only one in his grade to have a solo, he killed it in front of at least 2000 people. He took a couple deep breaths to center himself before he walked up, and even tapped on the mic a couple of times to make sure it was on before the song started.
2) I stopped into a semi-national grocery retailer (think green logo and angled parking for FL people....) and the power was flickering in the store and would buzz like it was shorting out.
3) I did not have a good night's sleep last night for some reason. It has been all over the past this past week.
4) I am going to water the plants in my office before I leave today.
5) Kids are playing video games and watching TV at home since school was canceled.

Those parking lots annoy the ever living crap out of me. You get people pulling through and then they're headed in the wrong direction plus I just find them a real pain. First world problems I know . . . .

Yea... I know. My neighbors are pissed that they did not include golf cart parking too.

2. Friday is the best week day. But you already knew that
3. We decided to postpone the Oktoberfest activities until next weekend

  • Teenage boy (working hard on mastering executive functioning for high level functions)
  • Teenage boy (has many opinions and needs to tell them at someone)
  • Teenage boy (quickly growing large but needs motivation)

1) CT scan on Weds was no where near as bad as a head MRI.

2) Waiting for interpretation of scan and results of tests makes me antsy.

3) Have to see both parentals this weekend. Will be stressful.

4) At the office today. Some Fridays I'm the only one here. Today I have company.

5) The dog is really slowing down. She is old, but still sweet and silly at the same time.

4. the sauerkraut should be ready to sample by tomorrow, though
1) My pickles should be ready tomorrow. Sauerkraut might be Sunday. How long do you let yours ferment for?
2) We have been following all the Peloton layoffs. I wonder at what point they sell the company and adjust their platform.
3) When you go to meetings and they provide nametags in plastic sleeves, do you give them back or take them with you? I mean come on, it's mine... even has my name on it....
4) It is 80 degrees and there isn't a cloud in the sky. I think I will go for a walk with the dog after dinner tonight when it cools down.
5) I have been trying to complete my 5 things all day.... and now I have achieved that goal.

1. Moved into a new office/building
2. I have two windows...one looks out to the golf course
3. I was in a storage closet until today
4. Nice to have 60-70 degree weather
5. Playing golf with my brother on Monday

1) The other planner & I ran the beer garden for last night's downtown concert - it's about the closet we'll ever get to owning a bar
2) No reported ABC violations!!!
3) We have 3 birthday parties to attend this weekend
4) It's a very nice day today - the weather is outstanding
5) Mrs. P lost one of her earrings yesterday sometime & it was one of her favorite pairs.
