Achooo!
Achooo!
Coughcoughcough!
Maister is home sick today with a cold. I'm sure I could make it through the day at work, but there's no way I'm even considering putting in a full day. Not with my opening night show tomorrow night. I blame my boss for giving his cold to me - so it's only fair he should pay the price at work for getting me sick to begin with (although, I guess in actuality it means Michaelskis will end up paying the price......well, I guess that's OK too!)

My question - what is your favorite remedy for the common cold? So far I sent the wife out to get some Zycam I bought 2 cans of chicken noodle soup and am hopped up on like 5 cold tabs (hmmm.....potential for a new thread - the neverending "Hey, I'm feverishly delirious thread?)

Hot tea, with a healthy dose of Jim Beam...., just kidding, unless you wish to make things worse.

I have definately noticed that booze makes colds worse. I think it weakens ones immune system. I guess booze could improve one's outlook on life for a short period of time but really, I don't think there's much out there to improve the quality of one's existence while suffering from a cold .......unless, maybe you count long sleeve shirts.

I had to help some at the counter....
Try taking Vitamin C supplements and wash them down with Orange Juice.

OH... and plenty of ESPN Classic to get you through the day.

Being an ex-marine, surely you know that the best cure for a cold is to put about 3 layers of clothes on, go for a long jog, and then have a steaming hot shower...

If you are trying for a quick fix, colloidal silver can sometimes do it. Also mega-doses of zinc. I've never had good luck with echinicea, but some people do. Most OTC drugs actually prolong it because they dry out the system to give you quick relief, instead of promoting healing. Also, lots of water, LOTS. And I sometimes find that a steam room really help, especially if you can get a little eucalyptus oil into the steam.

I drink plenty of orange juice and sometimes I'll take a bit of cold and cough medicine. Nothin' says lovin' like a pound cake from the oven though! :p :D

Day Quil (sp?)
Night Quil (sp?)

They get me through. Ironically to the previous posts, the Night Quil (sp?) has planty o' alcohol...this is what make you sleep. :p

The only things I use when I have a cold are saline spray (if stuffy) or sore-throat lozenges. Any of the OTC's that have antihistimine qualities just turn the cold into a sinus infection for me.

Big fan of the Quil's...have a bottle of DayQuil at the office always.

A HOT bath, where I submerge every part of me (it is really important to make sure you submerge your face completely -- germs like to live in the ears and sinuses because they are cooler than other parts of the body) followed by wrapping up in a blanket (again -- covered COMPLETELY, including the face) for about 15 to 20 minutes. Put salt in the water so it doesn't leach all the oils and dry your skin out horribly. And have some orange juice or a banana and lots to drink to replenish what all that sweating takes out of you. A salty snack and a b-complex tablet is also warranted after such self-torture.

Hot and sour soup; Twining's Lemon Ginger herb tea; as much rest as I can get. I don't take cold medicine, either, the symptoms are what cure the cold I think.

Megadoses of vitamin C, whenever I feel a cold coming on.

At the first sign of a cold, I start popping C and echinacea. It doesn't stave the cold off, just speeds it up. And hydrate hydrate hydrate. And I'm definitely a fan of hte HOT bath.

Also: Soak your toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide every day that you have a cold and change your bedsheets when you begin feeling better.

Chicken Soup Alla-Bear:

Boil a whole chicken in a pot of water. When done save the broth and remove the meat from the bones. Throw the meat back in the broth.

Prepare home-made noodles if you have the time OR you can buy noodles very similar to home made, in the frozen food section of your local Kroger (Ohio and others), Meijer (Michigan and others), Safeway (west coast?), Food City (De Noc).

Add in a bunch of diced onions, diced green pepper, diced celery stalks, whole fresh mushrooms, fresh diced carrots.

Sprinkle in a bunch of black pepper.

Add in, to "your taste", chicken boullion. I do a big pot and use a lot. You may not because of the high salt content. Suit yourself.

Cook all this stuff until the vegies are tender. Mix in the noodles.

Eat.

Wait till cold leaves your body. This probably won't help but it sure tastes good on a cold day.

Bear In Da Kitchen

SLEEP. Nothing better for a cold than LOTS OF REST.
Take a hot shower or bath and put clean sheets on your bed -- feels great!
Ny-Quil will give you the same, if not better, result as a hot toddy.
Lots of liquids!!!
If your chest is congested, nothing is better than good ol' Vicks Vapor Rub. The smell of that stuff always takes me back to my childhood.

I was in a CVS (phamacy) last night and I saw some product that claims to prevent colds. You are supposed to take it when you feel it coming on or if you are going to be in a crowded space (e.g. airplane).

Thanks all for the great suggestions. I ended up doing practically all of them (except daytime TV!). Some I had never heard before and others were old favorites. I hydrated so much my bladder has permanently distended to the size of a basketball. I took massive doses of vitamin c, zinc and a little echinacea. I used Zicam. I ate chicken noodle soup. I took a super hot bath and I also spent most of the day playing computer games.
Today, I feel fine. But I still sound congested - which is bad for tonight's play. Oh well, it wouldn't be the first time critics eat me alive and I'm sure it won't be the last.

I find that I sound the sickest when I'm justabout better. Glad you're feeling better. Break a leg. :)

Try this: www.califmichele.com/saline.html

You probably cannot come up with the xylitol on short notice, but you can do the "regular" saline solution. HTH.

EDIT: Just to clarify, on short notice like this and without a history of Serious sinus problems, I recommend that you do the math and mix it up in an 8 oz. drinking glass. Heck, you can guestimate -- before this was prescribed to me by two different medical specialists, I used to put table salt and tap water in a cup and stir. The high level of precision, cleanliness, etc...is intended for folks who use this routinely because their bodies are seriously defective (you know: Like Me :) ).

I have a cold. Not sure what it is really. No congestion. Just very tired and a cough. Something in my chest.

Anyway, I DESPISE Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup. The smell of it makes me think of being a kid and being sick.

However, today had a Lipton's Chicken Noodle Cup-O-Soup. Cheap, not too bad, and didn't make me think of sickness the way Campbell's does.

My kids call Lipton's "Sick Kid Soup" because it's what I always make them when they're sick. I feel the same way about Campbell's. Actually makes me feel worse.

The best cure for a cold is to swim or otherwise be active while submerged in saltwater. Growing up in Southern California anytime I had a cold (and most times I didn't) I would go surfing and it would clean that stuff right out of me no joke.

As far as chicken soup, it's amazing how easy it is to make yourself and is so much better than canned. When I have a cold I will make an asian inspired chicken soul with tons of garlic, ginger, onions and hot peppers and that does wonders.

Some intriguing possibilities come to mind.

Chicken tortilla soup. Sautee and pull apart a couple chicken breasts, add them to the soup pot with some boullion, pepper, garlic, cumin and chili powder. Add a can of black beans, a small chopped and sauteed onion, a can of diced tomatoes, corn, and some chili powder. Top a bowl with a tablespoon of honey yogurt and a handful of tortilla chips.

My wife makes the best chicken noodle cold cure. Homemade with big chunks of chicken a few veggies, just the right thing to cure the cold and no saltwater required. Or even worse, swimming.

When I am not feeling well, the boxed chicken soup is my go to option.

I have do admit that my wife makes an awesome homemade chicken soup, but it is so rare that we have it, and if I am not feeling well, my wife focuses on keeping the kids out of my hair instead of cooking elaborate meals.

The special Grass makes it better. Plus the enjoyment of 1/2 gallon of soup.

I love the regular Mrs. Grass' soup, it's my favorite.

Fiance's favorite chicken noodle is his grandma's, then he found out she puts chicken feet in it :-o Who would have thought there would be enough.... stuff.... on chicken feet to flavor soup. He's wanting to try and make it sometime but will leave out that special addition....
