First car I drove was my grandmother's 1961 Ford Starliner. White over black, nearing the end of the tailfin days. Grandma had moved to Cali and it was just sitting there. The fact I didn't yet have a learner's permit was no deterrent: I took her for a quick spin and decided big cars didn't do anything for me. First car I owned was a '72 bug.
 
Ruby is back. I drove her around today and she seems to be doing fine although she stalled as I was backing out of the driveway. She did not do it again and my husband drove her around and said he couldn't replicate it so it just might have just been a one off. He told me to take his car to work on my office day this week since I travel 75 miles one way and he works locally.
 
My dad had a '60 Lincoln (final year with the big fishtail rear end) that also got wrecked, but not totaled in a snow storm in early 1965: he spun out in an intersection on his way home from work and sideswiped a tree. He said the car ran fine and looked perfect on the driver's side but every panel on the passenger's side was messed up.

Later in the year he was driving somewhere and was going past a Ford dealership when he saw a truck full of brand new Mustangs being delivered so he pulled in and parked with his driver's side facing the showroom and went to go look at the Mustangs. A salesman came out and my dad said they started talking and he picked out a car still on the truck he really liked and pointed to his Lincoln and asked what he could get on a trade for it. Without even going to check it out, the salesman threw out some number and my dad said he'd take it! :rofl:

My dad being the honest guy he is though, said something like, "...but, you may want to go look at the other side of the car before we sign anything." Dealer took a look and stood buy his original offer and then my dad literally drove his metallic green fastback Mustang off the truck.

He always says it was a fun little car but after about 2 years he started having constant problems with it that he blamed on a bad batch of gasoline.
I purchased a vehicle from parents knowing that it had a salvage (flood) title. Certainly made the purchase cheaper. They had also replaced the transmission and transfer case. They did not know it had a salvage title, however, until it was too late. Soon took a job out of state and retitled the vehicle but the salvage did not transfer to the new state. Moved back 10 months later. Ended up replacing the A4LD transmission which where inherently poor, and torque convertor. Traded in on a mini-van because that is what you do when you have your first child. Agreed on the trade-in price (I typically do not trade-in as that is money lost) but figured I'd have a hard time selling. Since the salvage did not show when I gave them the title, the value was based on a clean title. Only after they did some research did they (and myself) find out the error but still agreed to take the trade value initially agreed upon.

Could be the control module relearning the timing (which was probably messed up when the coil was bad).
 
Dodge Shadow and the Plymouth Sundance were absolutely EVERYWHERE!
I had a Sundance and really liked it, but didn't have it very long. Bought it as a used car, had some overheating issues, then I screwed up something in the transmission while trying to get unstuck from some snow. Wore the snow and ice down to the ground and when it it actual pavement I got good traction and something inside the transmission bent/broke/failed. It still ran but shifted when you didn't want it to after that. The configuration of the car was perfect as a second care for a small family: Four reasonably roomy seats plus the rear seats folded down and there was a hatchback (even though it was styled as a coupe with a little notchback). I loved the configuration of the car but the mechanicals were not the best. Mine looked like this, same color and everything.

Traded in on a mini-van because that is what you do when you have your first child.
Never owned a minivan. Closest we ever had when my kids were little was an Escort wagon (it replaced the Sundance). We had it in the family for nearly 20 years until my son finally (almost literally) drove the wheels off that thing. It got totaled out at one point and we bought it back for salvage value and drove it some more.

Mini-vans get a bad rap but they are so worth it with young kids getting in and out of a vehicle. Sliding doors = no door dings. Good for road trips, too.

A buddy of mine is an avid cyclist and LOVES minivans due to the low load height and high interior clearance that allows him to only need to remove a front wheel, keeping bikes fully secured inside versus a truck bed.
 
We rented a mini-van for a road trip once and I can see the allure. I'm just content with smaller vehicles. The biggest cars we've owned have been a Taurus and an Escape.

^You could order Mopar Minivans with a 5 Speed for the entirety of the First Gen (83-90). Manual gearboxes were also options for 92, 93 and 94 but not 91 or 95.


I almost bought a manual '94 in 2021, but a softball size rust hole in the drivers side rocker panel + strut tower rust convinced me not to (it was a lifetime Quebec van, nuff said).

I go out to a local trail for a long run on most Sunday mornings and whenever I run past the two busiest trailheads there are usually a couple big cycling groups forming up and I almost always see somebody sitting there in a minivan with the tailgate and sliding door open and you can see inside and how they've removed the seats and have it set up perfectly for a couple bikes and some gear. Does seem like a great vehicle for cyclists.

I kind of felt dumb driving my bike to the location to ride a short ~3 mile event, so I rode my bike across town (6 miles round trip) and rode the event (~a 3 mile round trip short and flat rail-trail ride).

When I sign up for running events, if it's a 5k or a 10k I have a policy that I need to run (or walk) to the start line if the distance of the race is greater than the distance from my front door to the start line. I used to do that for half marathons too until I signed up for one that was about 8 miles from my house so I ended up having to run 8 miles there, 13 miles for the race, and 8 miles home. That was the end of that policy.
 
We had it out a couple of times. The last time it got too hot. I have a new thermostat for it, but haven't made time to do the work. This summer has just flown by.
So I changed out the thermostat over the weekend, but it still got hot and I noticed the fan didn't come on and it's steaming around the temp sensor/fan switch in the radiator, so that switch is likely bad. I have another one on the way which should be here tomorrow. I'll test it by jumpering the terminals to make sure the fan works. If the fan kicks on, it's the switch. If the fan doesn't kick on, the fan is bad. Either way the switch needs to be replaced as it's leaking. Hopefully, the fan works as it'll be more than $17 to replace that the switch cost.

I had a few friends get sent to the Evasive Driving School when I was in the Marines and everybody always came back saying it was the best, most fun thing they had ever done in the military. I remember anytime we'd get a spot made available to us to send somebody, there were always fights and arguments over who would get to go.
 
So a colleague of my wife's creased my wife's car in the parking lot. She told her and yesterday my wife took her car over to the shop to get fixed. The rental they gave her is some kind of Nissan sedan and it is looooooong, much longer than my wife's Escape. This Nissan barely fits in our garage.
 
I received a letter from FCA that they want to use my '22 Jeep Gladiator for emissions testing and if I agree, they'll give me $1k (in a gift card) and a loaner with free gas for the duration of the test... which would take between 5 to 8 weeks. I had no idea that their random testing takes that long.

I'll definitely offer them up my Jeep to use for a bit.

My wife wants a new vehicle sooner rather than later so if I have any say in what sort of loaner they offer me, I'm going to ask for a Grand Cherokee since that's high on the list of things my wife would want so it would be nice to test one out for a longer period... unless I can get them to offer up a Stelvio or Quadrifoglio!

Forgot all about this until early last week when I got a call from FCA asking some more questions about my Jeep and then selecting it for their EVAP testing. They set up a time to come switch vehicles with me for Wednesday of last week and said they'd be bringing me a "comparable" vehicle. On Tuesday afternoon they called to say the Gladiator that they were going to bring me had some body damage so they offered me either a brand new Dodge Durango with a Hemi and less than 100 miles on it or a 2023 Jeep Wagoneer Wagoneer by Jeep. I always thought the Durangos were sort of trashy looking so (after double checking to see if they had a Grand Cherokee they could bring me, which they did not) asked for the Wagoneer.

They dropped the Wagoneer of first thing Wednesday morning and holy crap this thing is huge! I have to make a very tight 180Āŗ to get into my garage and no matter how hard I try, it isn't going in there. My Gladiator has the Rubicon trim package so it sits up higher already but the front end on this Wagoneer is so massive I can barely see anything in front of me - I can see how people run over their kids in their driveway in these big SUVs and full size trucks. The interior is nice and it definitely rides smoother but it's nearly a foot wider than my Gladiator is. I had to drive out to a conference in Ann Arbor on Thursday and Friday and the Wagoneer actually gets better mileage than my Gladiator, but it's just so d*mn big and ostentatious that it makes me feel bad to just drive it, especially when I am the only one in the vehicle.

So a colleague of my wife's creased my wife's car in the parking lot. She told her and yesterday my wife took her car over to the shop to get fixed. The rental they gave her is some kind of Nissan sedan and it is looooooong, much longer than my wife's Escape. This Nissan barely fits in our garage.

I spent an hour yesterday cleaning some stuff up in my garage to try and make more space for this beast and tried maneuvering in from a few different angles but nope. I think I almost had it in there once but there were so many sensors and alarms going off that it scared me enough to give up.

I only live a few miles from the FCA HQ and testing facility so hopefully they'll finish up the work on my Jeep and get it back to me sooner than the 5 to 8 week estimate, especially since they don't need to wait to ship it across the country, they just need to find somebody to take it on a 15 minute drive.
 
We keep getting letters from Hyundai wanting us to take Butterscotch in to have the ignition equipped with an anti-theft module. Farmers Insurance is sending us the same nagging letter.

I like dealerships about as much as I like getting punched in the face and sitting in the middle seat, so Butterscotch is not getting the fix.

A subcontractor was painting near where I work. Apparently, it was windier than tolerances suggested and overspray hit my parked car, which is dark blue metallic and the gray paint speckles are quite noticeable.

I hope they have good liability insurance.

You need to do it. Right now every person I know who's had a car stolen recently has been a Hyundai or a Kia. Apparently there are instructions out on the intarwebz about how to hack into the flow in the ignition.
 
Car related - fun times with DMV:

The tag on my truck expires in November. I mailed my registration and payment to them on Oct 20th & hadn't received my new sticker for my tag yet. I called to inquire.

After all the information was given they checked the records and had reassigned my plate back in August due to a clerical error (they typed in my plate number instead of the other person's that was renewing). This being the case, the plate for my truck was terminated. They have no record of my check being processed & it hasn't cleared my bank and I'll have to stop payment on that check.

I found this out on Monday morning. Spoke to them twice. This morning they did call me back and have restored my plate, cancelled the other guys plate and I was able to renew online. Maybe I'll get my sticker before the 30th, but I doubt it.

I guess the other guy will have fun this afternoon when they notify him that they cancelled his plate.

Kind of surprised that didn't flag or something.

My plates are due by the end of the year. I probably need to get my inspection done soon. For renewal I go to a local grocery store; some chains are authorized state agents and can renew registrations. The nice thing is there's little or no line and you get your new sticker on the spot.

This is why I use New York State's handy online MYDMV system! It conveniently sends me automated alerts when my NYS registration is nearing expiry, reminds me of same re: license renewals and eye exam dates. All appointments can be scheduled online, which lets you have priority at IRL service branches...we call them "DO's" or district offices, and your temp inspection will always come from a valid DO, and in more recent years 3rd party tag services that exist soley because New Yorker's are lazy and charge a fee for doing all this for you.

I haven't written a paper cheque since 2013.
 
One of the annoyances of having a truck, at least for me, is that I randomly find trash that people decided that my truck bed is a good place to throw it. In the last month, I have found random receipts, two different beer cans, and an empty cigarette pack. Why would people think that is okay?

It conveniently sends me automated alerts when my NYS registration is nearing expiry, reminds me of same re: license renewals and eye exam dates. All appointments can be scheduled online, which lets you have priority at IRL service branches...we call them "DO's" or district offices, and your temp inspection will always come from a valid DO, and in more recent years 3rd party tag services that exist soley because New Yorker's are lazy and charge a fee for doing all this for you.

I haven't written a paper cheque since 2013.
I'm so glad emissions are not required in my County like in the collar counties of Chicago. My daily driver, 2011 VW JSW TDi would not pass due to a minor CEL and with any luck this winter, it will become even more non compliant with emissions as I will likely hit a pothole and the DPF and EGR will fall off, it will be such a shame.

New York requires emissions on anything 1996 or newer. But its easy to work around, especially if you have an OBD scanner ;)

Nevada only requires it in counties above a certain population (100,000, I think?) The county I live in has only 4,000 people, so no need to get anything "smogged."

NJ is the same. Everyone knows you take it to the 3rd party inspection place if you fail at the MVC facility šŸ˜‰

My car is old enough to buy cigarettes and thus allowed to pass inspection with the CEL on in my state. But it’s annoying. It throws the code the second you start it up even after clearing. (O2 sensor in the cat). Stupid thing is the CEL also turns on some nanny circuit so you can’t use cruise and the cruise button light flashes all the time. Annoying.

I'm not even sure what the emissions test involves other than showing up to one of the inspection stations every other year and sitting in a little booth while they do I'm not sure what. Haven't had trouble passing yet.

What are you driving? 00s Subaru?

I had two Legacy's, a '95 & a '99 that had perma-CEL and cruise worked fine. Reddit seems to say what your experiencing happens allot to Subaru's.
