With almost every story, there is an end. At least there is for a book or a movie. Sometimes it is the completion of a significant event or action, sometimes it is the death of a major character. But at some point, we close the book, or the lights on the theater come on and we go home.
In the real world, the only time that any story ends is when someone passes away, and even then, the whole story does not really end, only their part in it. Which makes me wonder if the stories in movies and films continue, what happens next.
Take the original Top Gun movie. In the end Maverick and Charlie meet back in a bar and we assume it goes on that they are together. Decades later we learn no, that didn't happen, and in Top Gun Maverick, they play off a single sentence regarding a high speed flyby over several air traffic control towners and one general's daughter "Penny Benjamin", who just happens to buy a bar near the Flight School in the last movie. This time, the movie ends with them flying off into the sunset. And so we assume they stay together... but do they? I don't know.
Yesterday a trailer came out for a new hunger games movie that takes place between the prequal and the original book. But what happens after the last book? Does Katniss find her peace finally, do the districts truly unite for equity? Do her and Pita have kids? I don't know.
What happens to Marty McFly after Back to the Future III? What happens to Rey after the last Starwars movie? I don't know.
What about you, do you wonder what happens next when you finish a final movie or book? If so, which ones and what do you think happens?
