A wonderful castle by the sea... made of sand.

Last weekend a group of 3 families met on the beach. The kids started building a sandcastle and two other dads and myself joined in. By the time we finished, it was about 4 feet tall (taller than any of the kids), and was decorated with sea shells, drift wood, and small flags made out of price tags and beach grass. We had our kingdom and were about to defend it, until mother nature used the power of the sea to turn the mighty kingdom into a collapsing island... and then it was gone as the tide reclaimed the materials.

Do you build sandcastles at the beach? Are they just sand or do you use shells and stuff?

Beach bum since 1968.

This summer family built one using regular construction shovels, 5 gallon bucket, castle molds, & shells

Yea, haven't seen one of those since I had kids. Usually they had less to do with kid activities and more about clothing options. I will have to plan a trip sometime. The kids might enjoy building a real sand castle instead of just mud piles in the back yard.

Grew up on the beach and built many a sandcastle in my time. Dad taught me the drip method to make nice capitals on the turrets.

Two of the best was a 30' x 50' (but not very tall) and one which was about 4' tall which was detailed with a mote, shells, driftwood and a horseshoe crab shell
