I'd love to go and do a meet up, but I already bought tickets to attend the Motor City Comic Con on 11/15. Had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Wisconsin game at the Big House last month, so in a way, as the say, "I'm good."

Nope for me. Two boys have Scholastic Bowl club competition during that time and the household budget isn't going to swing it.

But I'm sure it will be on Chicagoland broadcast stations, so I will certainly watch it on TV.

My wife and her cousin (who lives in Chicago and is another Michigan alum) are going to the game. I try to go to as few games as possible anymore but that one did pique my interest just because of the locale but alas, I will be volunteering at a Model UN conference basically all day long on the 15th.

Rutgers vs. Princeton ā€” The Birth of College Football

It was a clear Saturday in New Brunswick. About a hundred students gathered on a rough patch of ground across from Rutgersā€™ Queens Campus, curious to see something entirely new.

Shortly after noon, Princetonā€™s team arrived by train, greeted by a mix of cheers and playful taunts from Rutgers students.

The two sides met to agree on the rules, a blend of English soccer and rugby, where players could only kick or bat the round ball forward, never carry it. The first to reach ten goals would win.

Rutgers captain William J. Leggett had his men tie scarlet ribbons around their heads to distinguish them from their rivals. It was the first use of scarlet as Rutgersā€™ color. Princetonā€™s William S. Gummere, later Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, served as referee.

When play began, the student newspaper, the Targum, described ā€œheadlong running, wild shouting, and frantic kicking.ā€ Students surged up and down the uneven field, the ball skipping through mud and trampled grass.

By the time the final goal was scored, Rutgers led six to four. It was the first victory in intercollegiate football history.

That night, the two teams gathered together for what the Targum called a ā€œfine supperā€ ā€” singing, laughing, and toasting the day.

Rutgers hosted warmly; Princeton, the paper noted, was ā€œgallant in defeat,ā€ boarding the train home ā€œthirsting to beat us next time, if they can.ā€

A week later, they would, but the legacy was already secure.

From this small college field, the game of American football had begun.

Ticket prices are outrageous for two mediocre football teams...but it's Wrigley, so I get it. Unfortunately, I'm having a certain procedure done the day before that I think can be best described by Michael Scott:

I haven't had much at all to cheer for in this dumpster fire of a season. But Iowa losing at home in agonizing fashion always perks me up a bit.

I had that procedure done about 9 years ago. My wife was convinced it was going to be the most painful thing in the world for me but my doctor kept telling me it wasn't going to be too bad. I let the wife believe what she wanted and she took the kids to the beach for the weekend after bringing me home from the doctor's so I could relax in peace and quiet. About half an hour after they all left I was already bored out of my mind so I walked a mile and a half to get lunch downtown and then walked home. Later in the afternoon I went for a 10 mile run and then I went for another long run the next day and then walked into town to go see a movie in the evening.

It was astonishing how not painful it was.

I missed the game because I was volunteering at a student event and for some reason I thought it was a late afternoon game so I didn't even set the DVR. I didn't realize I was missing it until I called my dad around 1:00 to wish him a happy birthday and I could hear my mom yelling at the TV in the background!

I finished up my stint at the school a bit earlier than expected and got home just in time to see the final 3 minutes so I guess I saw everything that mattered. :rofl:

While that scoring sequence would be impossible, I'd love to see a 1 point safety! I don't care about Oregon or K State so I missed the 1 point safety in the Fiesta Bowl a few years back:


FWIW, it's happened a few times in the NCAA but it's never happened in the NFL... though the Bills almost scored one against the Ravens earlier this season: The Ravens blocked a PAT and then the player who recovered it in their end zone inexplicably pitched it backwards to another Raven. Unfortunately for fans of weird scoring plays, the other Raven had the presence of mind to get out of the end zone before downing it.

An even better 1 point safety would be the defense blocking the PAT and then it somehow rolls all the way back to the offense's end zone (or the offense recovers it and runs 100 yards backwards) and then the offense gets tackled in their own end zone, giving the defense the 1 point safety (in the example from the K State game, the kicking team/offense scored the safety). But sadly that will probably never happen.
 
It is THE GAME week.

Michigan looked a lot better last week, but OSU will by far be the biggest test of the year. ESPN is not giving them much of a chance.

If Michigan is healthy I think they're probably a bit better than they were last year. That said, OSU is much much better than last season and seems to have a much deeper bench.

I'm still not counting out the Wolverines though.

Honest question: If this Michigan team beats this OSU team does Ryan Day lose his job no matter what OSU does in the CFP?

I don't think so. If they lose on Saturday to THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, and lose in the first round, I think he is out. But if he is able to do a repeat and the National Championship, I think he will get another year.
 
OSU should kill, but as I always say, the GAME doesn't matter who is better.

It is always important to remember... in the last 10 match ups it is 6-4. I remember when I was very pleased with myself when we had won 8 in a row. I clearly recall myself in 2019 thinking how boring of a rivalry it was.

I am pleased that the GAME is so much more competitive now. We have the last two national champions fighting tooth and nail for a win the last 2 years. That is what it is supposed to be.

With that said, I am hopeful that I will talk trash on Monday AM. ;) Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

OSU outplayed Michigan on Saturday. Michigan started strong, but OSU's defense prevented them from finding the endzone the entire game. Sure, there were some crappy calls on both sides, but the reality is Michigan got beat by a team that was more prepared.

I also want to give props to the OSU coaching staff for how they controlled their team after the game.

Finally, Sherrone Moore's post-game press conference shows why he is the right guy for the job. He did not blame the refs or make excuses, he just said it the way it was, OSU outplayed them. However, I knowing how young the Michigan team is and how pissed Moore is, I wonder if this will light a fire under them to do much better next year.

CFP...who deserves a spot? Who does not? BYU seems to be odd team likely out even with one regular season loss. I don't think they will beat TT in Big12 championship game. Should losing to the same team, ranked higher, leave the Cougars of of the CFP? A lot of talk about ND ranked where they should not be after starting 0-2. A lot of talk about Texas wanting to get in but with the Florida loss...

It wasn't close. Which feels good. I don't know that gloating feels right, as Michigan is really going in the wrong direction with Moore. They were somewhat classless last year with the flag plant, and then this year, they looked silly protecting the block M. They were not disciplined and some of the biggest mistakes could have potentially changed the trajectory of the game (who isn't ejected after head butting a ref?!?). They should be better than they are. They lost the only 3 games that had reasonable opponents this year.

With that said, I hope they keep Moore - we will win a lot more if he is coach ;) He has the Ohio State games as his only feathers in his cap (which is why Michigan isn't trying to kick him out right now). Overall the team has gotten substantially worse since the Championship win 2 years ago, and they don't have any stars that looks like they are going to make them something more next year. They paid a crazy price for a QB who is really not showing up, and the team around him isn't helping him get better.

Happy for THE Buckeyes, but overall it reflects more of the fact that Michigan isn't as good anymore.

Indiana is going to be a tough game, especially when it is in Indianapolis. I looked to get tickets... and I was not able to stomach that concept. Both OSU and Indiana are probably locks for top 4 and byes in the playoffs, so the championship game seems somewhat pointless, but I hope it is a competitive game at least.

Also, Lane Kiffin leaving Ole Miss like he did is so Lane Kiffin. Yikes...

I wouldn't be surprised if Ohio State puts up 35 against Indiana before halftime. This team has tinkered with their running game the last few games with starting WRs being out for injury and it performed well against Michigan. It's running on all cylinders now; just in time for the playoffs.

He wanted to stay and coach, but he also wanted to recruit for LSU and early signing day this week. Ole Miss made the right call in telling him no thanks. He's a good coach and recruiter but he's not ever going to one of the greats because no one wants to deal with the drama or believes him.

I think most in Auburn wanted Sumrall. The blogs made it sound like a deal was pretty much worked out last week but either UF moving away from Kiffin or AU being a bit of a dumpster fire made him reconsider. I can deal with Golesh.
