Travel ✈️ 2022 travel plans

Sad Sailor Moon GIF

I was hoping to go to APA in San Diego - my dream trip was a long weekend trip to Barcelona to see my friend or a couple of weeks in Brazil to visit friends in February but yeah that's all shot

The name of the travel game is flexibility and managing expectations, I suppose.

We would like to travel for Easter depending on the world situation.

We have talked about Spain, Tenerife, or Mauritius.

I'll probably visit my brother in Florida in February or March. I'd sort of like to drive and hit some states I've never been to, though I'd probably want to take two weeks to do that to make it worthwhile....

We need to resume our genealogy tour, pandemic withstanding.

We need to do a southern Germany/Switzerland leg. Maybe fly into Stuttgart for starters and harass some of the locals for a couple of hours.

We're going to Oregon for spring break (thanks American for the $3600 in flight vouchers!) and on a week long cruise in August. The rest will probably be long weekends somewhere within 6 hours driving distance.

I am travel planning with a giant * due to covid. But I am an optimist and hoping this summer might be similar to last summer when things really opened up for travel.

Easter (April) break: Spain

May: Tulips in Netherlands

June: TBD

July: US

August: Norway or Sweden

Still waiting to see what happens with the APA conference. May stretch that a few more days if it happens.

Still a big * but we are continuing to plan a mid-continent tour in Sept./Oct. now looking at flying into Zurich and checking off a number of countries we haven't been to - Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Italy, and France. May also head north to Frankfort if we have the time, getting in trouble along the way. ;)

Our biergarten is always open!

There will be no international travel until 23 at least, maybe 2024. So I have been planning more domestic vacations. The kids and I are going to New Mexico this Summer to hit some of the National Parks like Carlsbad and National Monuments like White Sands and Los Alamos. I am going to Tulsa to visit my dad and to Cali to visit my brother. Hoping to hit Muir Woods. I have been to San Fran several times, so gonna get out of the City more this time.

No interest in conferences and sitting in rooms with a mask all day. Like International Travel, I am done until we are in endemic mode.

Several flights have a 24 hr layover in Stockholm. What a shame.

Like others, putting a big * on any international travel plans - even (especially) if travel restrictions are eased/lifted I expect there will be a big rush to get out to see the world likely meaning trips will cost more and destinations more crowded.

Hoping to get out to BC to see some friends who moved out there, but otherwise maybe just do some long weekend trips and staycation.

As long as places are open I plan to travel freely.

Short cruise the end of this month
Key West in March
Buffett concerts in North Carolina in April
Either a cruise or Caribbean resort in late June
Buffett in Boston in August (if the usual schedule holds)
PSU/Auburn game in Alabama in September
Maine in October
Other long weekends here and there where it's only a few hours drive

Was really hoping to attend APA in San Diego but if it happens I'm not going that far to sit spread out in a room with masks on.

The problem with going to APA is that I would possibly give in to the temptation to not attend the conference AT ALL and treat is as a vacation on the City's dime.

But I wouldn't do that 'cuz I got ethics and sh!+.

I thinking APA will offer both in person and on line/remote versions of the conference. If that is the case, I'll do the on line version again.

Heading down to the ancestral homeland (south Georgia) over Presidents Day weekend, then St. Lucia in May (screw you, Omicron) - nothing concrete beyond that.

Since it will probably be just me, I hope to visit Gettysburg for a long weekend in late spring. I might hire a licensed tour guide and spend some time covering the July 1 battleground. I also hope to get over and see a Cardinals game at Busch III finally.

Not ready to get in a plane yet, but when I do, I plan to visit Scotland and tour extensively.

If....no WHEN I return to Gettysburg I will most definitely hire a licensed tour guide. I went there 20 or so years ago, and thinking back on the experience would do probably a few things differently than I did then, but the tour guide would be the biggest thing. At the time I was interested in saving a bit of money, but that's not such a concern to me these days. Sure, I can tell you the general disposition of the troops on both sides for each of the days of the battle but there is so much more local knowledge and anecdotes that can be passed the licensed guides.

If you're that close you should try to get down to Antietam. Not as commercialized as Gettysburg but a really cool place to visit. Of course I'm partial because I grew up 8 miles from there.

I looked at Tijuana as a possible side trip if I go to San Diego.

I see ZERO reason to go there.

I have zero desire to fly anywhere this year. On the table is a trip to Buffalo this spring, and a drive to Philly as soon as omicron calms down. Still not comfortable traveling long distances.

I like Muir Woods; we stayed in wine country after the 2019?? APA San Fran conference and really enjoyed both parts of the trip!

As for me, I'm not able to see too far ahead as far as travel is concerned this year. I know there will be a few more trips between GA and NY, one involving a large truck full of my husband and our belongings...

Vacation planning is how I relax. I normally have 3-4 trips and itineraries floating around my head. Hubby and I have the opportunity for a week-long kid-free vacation in July and I am overwhelmed with the options.

I am excited to have the opportunity to travel with just Hubby (GLUTEN!!!!) but I don't want to go anywhere that we might want to take Itty Bitty in the future. I don't like to repeat places because there are so many places in the world.

Also in July a lot of the places I would like to go are overrun with tourists and many are already almost fully booked. We were thinking the French and Italian Riviera but the hotels are around 97% booked (at least the places with a/c!).

So at the moment I am thinking of Croatia but I don't know.

April: Spain
June: Salzburg, Austria
July: ???

  • Key West end of this week
  • 4 Buffett shows in April (Augusta, Savannah, Raleigh, Charlotte)
  • Dominican Republic in June
  • Pittsburgh in July (long weekend)
  • Boston in August (long weekend)
  • Alabama in September to see PSU play Auburn
  • Maine in October
Probably a few other long weekend trips before the end of the year. Next year hopefully can schedule a trip to Montana, Wyoming etc.
Laying the groundwork for a trip to Tahiti in 2025. That's been on my list forever. Another is the Galapagos Islands. I've wanted to go there since I was 7 years old.

^Majorca? It's probably booked with Scandinoovians by now, though ...

From where @dandy_warhol is, Croatia or Majorca would both be at the top of my list for a vacation without the kids. Somewhere in Greece would be up there too (we went to Corfu which was pretty great but it's the only spot I've been and I've heard that some of the smaller islands and ports are much nicer).

Majorca was party central the first time we went, which was the end of July and early August, and we had a blast. I've been all over the world and they also had the nicest beaches of anywhere I've been in Europe. Now that I'm older and don't really have a desire to be in a club until 4:00 a.m., I could still have a great time sitting on the beach all day or spending a morning hiking through the hills. There is also a fair amount of historic architecture and sightseeing to do in Palma.

I've been to a few places up and down the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia including Split and Dubrovnik and Zadar and up to Rijeka and Pula (neither of which are in Dalmatia but are still along the Adriatic). All were great but of course Dubrovnik was the standout. We were the first large American Naval vessel to go into Croatia after their civil war and we had pretty low expectations in terms of opportunity for liberty (after spending some time in Kosovo the year before we all expected bombed out buildings and horrible, cold weather) but we were all blown away. Split and Rijeka were both surprisingly cosmopolitan cities at the time. FWIW, the best pizza I ever had was in the old town in Dubrovnik and you can definitely feel and see the Italian influence all over the coast from the time these were all city-states trading with Venice. We also made it into Zagreb for a few days. Meh... Nothing wrong with Zagreb, but compared to the other cities, it wasn't nearly as interesting (however, now that I'm 20+ years older and my interests have changed, I'd probably enjoy Zagreb a lot more than I did at the time).

Croatia and Majorca were both on our short list for honeymoon locations when my wife and I got married. But, we both knew we wanted to do little more than lounge on a beach for a couple of weeks and weren't really interested in wandering around sightseeing and getting a history lesson so we found some more affordable locations in this hemisphere.

I don't know how much it costs to get there but Malta could also be worth taking a look at. There is plenty of history and stuff to see. The biggest drawback to Malta though is that the beaches (at least the few we checked out) were pretty rocky. There must be some sandy ones around there somewhere though.

No international travel planned this year. I did Switzerland last fall to visit my sister, but Hubby stayed home.

We are going to South Dakota later this summer. Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Sturgis, Wind Caverns, and other places planned. If anyone's been there and has suggestions, please let me know!

Finishing up my road trip to Florida. In between Atlanta and Chattanooga for the night. Had dinner in Atlanta, but would probably go back. Hopefully see some waterfalls tomorrow, those are non-existent in Chicagoland. Stayed with my brother and his wife for a week, glad I went this year because it sounds like they are moving again, with Elmira/Corning being the likely choice.

Wait...they are in the process of deliberately choosing to move there?

My sister in law is in Med school and they have a branch there. The cost of living in Florida is out of control, currently they pay 1800-1900 a month but equivalent units are now renting for 2800, though apparently they have an awful lot of vacancies, though they have not yet gotten a lease renewal....

@WSU MUP Student , Dubrovnik looks amazing. All of Croatia does in fact. That's what makes choosing so difficult! Hubby has amended his wants for vacation to include: doing nothing. This could be a challenge. I am not good at doing nothing. So the place will have to be beautiful to keep me entertained. Crete and Sardinia have been recommended as well. Malta is on our bucket list but probably for when Itty Bitty can join us. They are supposed to be decent for GF food.

In the meantime we've added another trip:

April: Spain
May: Dolomites, Italy
June: Salzburg, Austria
July: ???

Thought I'd venture over to a town I've never been to and hit the convenience store, grab a drink, perhaps a beef jerky, fill up, then head home all the while thinking of what a wonderful time to be alive.

Joking aside...looks like camping in the High Uinta mountains in July, Washington to see my parents as some point, then Oregon coast in the fall. The OR trip will be a belated 25th anniversary (May) as my SIL has said this is the best time to visit the coast and I believe crab season is underway. I suggested Italy or Greece to my wife for the anniversary trip but she does not want to visit Europe with what is going on.

I spent about a month in Trieste, Italy and we took a long weekend and traveled up to Salzburg and drove through the Dolomites on our return trip (we drove up through Slovenia on the way too Salzburg). Those two drives were through some of the most scenic landscapes I'd ever seen. After you get out of the more rugged mountains in Slovenia and Northern Italy and you're in Southern Austria it's like driving through a book of fairy tales with gently rolling hills and valleys with big mountains in the background. All the while the scenery is scattered with old palaces and estates and tiny castles.

Just set our plans for this summer. Heading to Boston for 4-5 days. I only got to see part of the city at one of the previous APA conferences. Thought there was enough stuff that both a 17 year old and 6 year old would like. We were going to stay longer, but flights returning were a little crazy so we decided to extend the trip and take the train to Portland Maine for about 4 days. Planning to rent a car check out some of the cities/towns, coast and Acadia.

If anyone has must-dos/visits in the area, we're just now trying to pencil in stops.

Make reservations as soon as they are available for Acadia. Especially Cadillac Mountain.

The trip down to the ancestral homeland was nice - got to connect with some family I hadn't seen in a while. And, I'm getting itchy for the St. Lucia trip, as in I just tuned out 95% of a weekly telcon for my work team thinking about it. As for the nothing concrete beyond that, we're maybe picking up Vegas** in June - Mrs. Bubba has a low effort work trip out there, so we're looking at me coming out at the end of it and adding a couple of days to her stay. I also have a couple of certificates from Delta for free companion fares for domestic flights to use by the end of the year (a legacy fringe benefit from all the work travel I did pre-Covid), so we're trying to figure out timing and destinations for those...

Also, the universe owes us for the 25th anniversary trip we'd been planning on a couple of years ago to several destinations in Europe, plus possibly Morocco...damn pandemic and everything - I'm thinking it's time to get back to planning that for next year.

**I have no interest in gambling or the shows, so I'm open to suggestions for what the hell to do if I do head out there...

My son graduates from high school on Friday night at Memorial Day weekend. He lives with ex-Mrs. Me in Kentucky, so I'm taking my family down to Lexington for the weekend. The highlight will probably be the Columbia Steak House Saturday night!

Are anybody's vacation plans going to change because there's no longer a mask mandate on domestic airplane flights?

Are anybody's vacation plans going to change because there's no longer a mask mandate on domestic airplane flights?

Nope. I will be double masking or wearing a KN45 if on a plane. I don't have any plane travel this year just out of sheer dumb luck.

So far we've done/planned the following:

January: Portland, Maine (drove)
April: Pittsburgh (drove) we got back home yesterday, had an amazing time, and will definitely be going back.
July: Cooperstown, NY (driving)
August: Cruise (leaving from Bayonne so we will drive to the port)
December: Cruise (also leaving from Bayonne)

I know you have all been waiting with bated breath...

....the July vacation destination has been decided: Santorini, Greece

April: Spain
May: Dolomites, Italy
June: Salzburg, Austria
July: Santorini, Greece
Updated:
April: Lake Garda, Italy
May: Dolomites, Italy
June: TBD
July: Santorini, Greece

I managed to book our hotel in Salzburg for June 2023. Whoops. Good thing I noticed before we tried to check in. Now we have to figure where to go. We could still head to Salzburg but London is Calling too.
