Here's a fun one for these times:

Cautiously optimistic?

Or just optimistic?

I did like most of Thor: Ragnarok.

I did like most of Thor: Ragnarok.

The cast for that movie looks excellent. Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant, and Alfie Allen. I'm in!

Dial of Destiny?

I like it. Though judging by the internets, that's a minority opinion. I heard rumors last year that the movie might involve time travel. If that is true, then perhaps the title references some sort of artifact they have to find, a la Ark, Temple, or Skull. Hopefully the movie is bonkers in a fun way! (I remember thinking back in 2008 how dumb the aliens concept was for Skull. But upon a recent re-watch, the cringe from Mutt and Marion is more unbearable. I now appreciate the movie's weirdness!) Can't wait for next summer!

Indiana Jones and the Eternal Hot Toddy

Indiana Jones and the Lost Social Security Check

Indiana Jones and the Breakfast ROMEOs

Indiana Jones and the Master Plan of Futility

Indiana Jones and the Zoning Sacrament Brotherhood

Indiana Jones and the Musty Dusty Flat File

Indiana Jones and the Out of Control Zeppelin of Zoning Violations

My son asked me the other day if I've seen the trailer for Cocaine Bear yet. I told him that's totally an internet hoax à la the Tide Pod challenge and Tiger King. He gave me the side eye treatment.

Could be awesome or terrible or terribly awesome or awesomely terrible.

Watched this on Prime TV yesterday with my 13 and 14 yr old sons.

Pretty dang good - B+

It's gory, but in a realistic and quick way. Plus, it actually executes pretty well on Home Alone style booytraps.

What is your Peak Pop-Culture Superhero? I saw Miles Morales this weekend, it was pretty good, but, without spoilers, I am not happy with how they are going to launch the third Spider-Verse movie.

Between Doctor Strange (Disney), Spider-Man (Sony), and Flash (Warner Bros. Discovery (AT&T?)), the emergence and solidification of the multiverse concept makes me cynical. Like, these multinational media holding companies need a throughline to perpetually freshen their IP for modern audiences and they are hanging their hat on the "multiverse" concept? In the 90s, we had multiple Batmans, from Keaton to Goose to Clooney, and none of us got confused. I mean, the nipples on the rubber suits were indeed a cause for concern. Also, of concern, was Mr. Schwarzenegger as Monsier Froi - "DIAMONDS!" Like, WTF?

I am not a comics and pop culture Luddite in need of an IP produced by one of those multinational media holding companies and have them return to the "source material". Hence the purpose of this post - with the release of the latest Spider-Verse movie, and the upcoming DC Comics attempt in less than two weeks at its multiverse, I firmly believe we are in the Age of Peak Pop-Culture Superthings. The parallel universe/multiverse concept seems to be something that's in the air right now, to whit, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and, indeed notwithstanding DeLoreans, I do believe we are going to get more of this head-splitting (mind-numbing?) pop culture fare given how successful it is.

And why is it successful? Because it can be everything to everyone, all at once, when projected on to the screen. In about two weeks, old people will rejoice when they finally get their Keaton Batman back, nevermind he did that already eight years ago with Birdman (and won Best Picture).

Yeah, comes off as lazy writing to me or lazy planning. Iron Man to Avengers was pretty well planned out. It kept a consistent story. If you changed an actor I don't think it would have been a big deal. Granted fan boys everywhere would be complaining about why Captain Thor Man is being played by a talking racoon instead of Robert, but the story worked. Each individual Batman movie worked and I'm not upset by the change in actors. I'm upset by the number of times we need to redo the origin story. We get it, you're a rich orphan. Spiderman is kind of doing the same thing. Oh look, it's a different universe, that's why things are different. Not because someone sold the rights to the name. Star Trek is doing the same thing with the rebooted Captain Kirk so they can change the actor from Shatner to the new guy. It's not exactly a multi-verse, but sort of the same thing. Just tell me this is a reimagining of Star Trek and forget the Shatnerverse and I'm good with that.

Just watched the Mission: Impossible 7 trailer, and wow, what a cluster of dumb. I heard Mister Cruise was recently crybabying over the fact that Oppenheimer will take his IMAX release date.
