When you hear these theme songs, it is more than just sounds, it is a reconnection to your past that transports you though space and time to the moments where you were sitting in a theater or in front of the TV. The emotions well up inside us as we hear those notes with a combination of comfort and excitement.
The magic of movie music is something that I think we often take for granted. We don't even need the video, but much like a commerical jingle, we instantly recognize the movie, and frequently the scenes from those movies as if we were at the theater.
Recently I watched a documentary called the Sounds of 007 where they discussed the music behind the James Bond movies. I was blown away by the nuances that they went through to use things such as fractional variations of the theme songs to illustrate the maturing of James Bond into 007 in Casino Royal, and then they did the same for the sensitive moments near the end of Die Another Day.
What is some of your favorite movie music and why? What piece of music really connects with you? Are there examples that completely missed the mark?
