For most Cyburbians your only exposure to Smash Mouth was probably through taking your kids to see SHREK (2001), CLOCKSTOPPERS (2002), MYSTERY MEN (1999) & INSPECTOR GADGET (1999) or any other number of kids films that Smash Mouth's music appeared in. All caps because all of which I saw in théâtres!

Smash Mouth was the first band I really got "into" when I was 8-11 years old. I got Astro Lounge on Cassette in '99 after hearing All-Star on both Z100 and Radio Disney, and begged mom and dad to take me to Tower Records to get that tape, and the "clean" version of the bands 1997 debut "Fush Yu Mang". In some ways, Smash Mouth's early ska-punk sound on that '97 record is responsible for me becoming Punk, something that some of us never grow out of, just look at Iggy Pop (b. 1947) 😎

Sadly, Steve Harrwell's life was allot less lucky than Iggy's. Shortly after stardom, Steve lost his first and only child to infant Leukemia* and from than (mid 2001) on, he was never the same. In many ways Steve was a sketchy dude and I am not trying to excuse his often quite problematic behavior especially the public outbursts that defined his persona later in life, sadly.

However troubled the man was, I I hope him and Presley are finally reunited and at peace wherever you are, thanks for being a part of my childhood!

Smash Mouth's best work:

I worked at a YMCA teen center for a summer when this album came out. They had a 5 disc cd changer. The kids constantly begged for this album on repeat. That was also a summer where Hanson and the Spice Girls were popular among the 12-16 aged kids, so I was usually ok with Smash Mouth.

What 90s kid doesn't know the words to those songs? "I said yeah. What a concept. I could use a little fuel myself and we could all use a little chaaaannngge." One of those quintessential all over the radio 90s bands that everybody knew before Clear Channel and Napster wrecked the music industry.,

Great 90s band and not unknown to some of us not so young folks.
