This song came up when I was driving our oldest somewhere the other day and I could literally see on her face the physical reaction she had to its dissonance. So naturally it's been on near constant repeat at home over the past week:

Dare I say, same studio? Yes. April Wine in 1980 and Rush in 1981. Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, was partially destroyed by fire in 2017 and eventually torn down in 2020.

Boy did this send me down a rabbit hole. Confirmed, for me at least, that the first version I hear makes all the difference. Had I heard the Elle King version, meh, who knows if I would ahve listened to it again. But Julie deGrazia's harmonies and stylings on Evan Honer's version are superb. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
 
If only modern musical artists had both the powerful sense of moral clarity and sheer musical talent that Mister T displayed back in his prime. Those were heady days I can tell you. I can hear all the mothers on Cyburbia nodding in approval at the message here.

 
^good message but the video element is highly questionable.

This video and song is awful. Since Rick James was involved, you know there was copious amounts of cocaine.

 

Haven't heard much from Rockwell since. It could be argued he'd have had no hit songs whatsoever but for the fact that daddy is Barry Gordy (of Motown fame) and could arrange to have Michael Jackson as his backup vocals.
 
48 years ago this week the Doobie Brothers took it to the streets at the Watts Community Center!



I just realized I also wore my Michael McDonald shirt today... it must have been fate!

The answer to the question: On the original concept album for Jesus Christ Superstar, Deep Purple's Ian Gillan sang the part of Jesus while Murray Head sang Judas.

I've always like JCSS, and Deep Purple is one of my favorite bands but I never made the connection until less than a decade ago.
 
Best version of this song (one of the 2 best from their most recent studio album) I've seen yet...

What is your favorite incarnation of Deep Purple?

I purchased this album in Moscow, Russia, in 1988.
