NEVERENDING ♾️ The NEVERENDING Weather Thread

I was in the office yesterday and buried in spreadsheets from around noon until 3:00 pm. When I finally got up from my desk for a bit and turned around and looked out my window I realized we suddenly had 3"+ of snow. It was nice and clear when I came in from a walk around 11:30 am and when I looked at the weather in the morning, it was supposed to be pretty dry all day.

Around 3:30 the snow was still coming down so I packed up and was out of the office by around 3:45. My usual ~18 minute drive home was about 85 minutes.

After dinner I went outside to shovel the driveway. We had probably 5" of very light fluffy snow so thankfully it was a pretty easy chore.

Around 9:50 pm I got a text from my buddy a couple neighborhoods over that his school district was closed for the day. I told my wife and she said, "I bet we get a notification within 5 minutes that our district is closed." We got that notice 2 minutes later.

I got up to go to the gym and spinning class this morning and you can barely tell that I shoveled the driveway. We must have gotten a few more inches of snow overnight. Usually, our roads are pretty clear by now and we're always complaining that they didn't need to cancel school but on my way back home from the gym the roads were still a mess (granted, it's just a 2 mile stretch, but still...). I was talking to a friend at the gym who lives closer to our downtown, where the streets are very narrow, and he said those neighborhoods are a mess. The city never declared a snow emergency yesterday so a lot of the cars were parked on the streets overnight. Plows couldn't make it down a lot of streets this morning and the ones they could make it down now have a ton of cars plowed in. I got curious and pulled up the navigation map in my Jeep with the different colors for traffic congestion and it's basically just a sea of red.

I don't think there was much advance forecast of this winter storm here. It sounds like a lot of the road departments were probably caught off guard.

We had a couple inches of snow early this morning and during the morning commute. One of my wiper blades broke on the way in to the office today.

If I didn't have to come in and pick up the Girl Scout Cookie order form I had left here, I would definitely have just worked from home.

Cold this week, with Artic Blast coming this weekend.

I'm going to the store for the essentials (well, at least bread) and a few things Hubby forgot over the weekend. And some wine.

There’ll be some sort of wintry mix here this weekend. Right now we’re in the ‘more snow than ice’ forecast but we’ll see.

...local weather predicting Icepocolypse...just home from store where we loaded up on ingredients, mainly for soups and chili...we have a gas range and a big wood stove.

As posted on FB

The weather people and the bread people are in cahoots.

We convinced of it

And I don’t mean “maybe.” I mean full-blown partnership. Like Batman & Robin… if Batman wore a tie and Robin drove a bread truck.

Because the moment the weatherman says “WINTRY MIX,” the bread man already got his keys in his hand like, “Say less.”

The weatherman be on TV acting all professional “Now folks, I’m not trying to alarm anyone…”Meanwhile he’s basically whispering to the bread man through the camera: “Move the loaves.”

Next thing you know, the bread truck pulls up behind Food Lion like it’s delivering government secrets, and the bread man hopping out with that “I’m about to buy a beach house” grin.

And the weatherman? Oh he smiling too.Because he don’t get paid in snow.He gets paid in cleared-out bread aisles.

Now let’s get this bread.

Good thing we're not in the snow band because our fridge is empty and we're almost out of bread! ;)

We are expecting some very cold temps tomorrow though so I may make a trip to the store to get stuff to make some chili or soup or something I can put in the slow cooker.

Looking forward to some serious snow. Fridge will be full after tonight's grocery run and I have nowhere I must go. Bring it on.

Upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning

WHAT...Heavy snow. A band of 8 to 13 inch accumulations across parts of southern Illinois, southeast Missouri, southwest Indiana and western Kentucky.

With regard to actual serious snow events, we tend to maintain higher than normal stocks of certain items (e.g. toilet paper, batteries, flour, yeast, other baking supplies, powdered hot cocoa etc.) during the winter months in general to prepare for this not unlikely event, but bread is usually not something we frantically head to the grocery store the night before a storm to purchase. If we're snowed in Mrs. Mais will usually devote the morning to baking savory loaves of yummy homemade bread to eat for the next few days.

kjel's standard winter weather forecast....

We can expect between 0" and 24" of snow starting at a random hour. Please look outside for frequent updates.

Headed for the double negative digits where I am. I might throw a space heater on in the shed for the chickens. They are all cold-hardy breeds but one time we had a snap like this a couple got frostbite on their combs.

One of the local TV stations has their own index to determine intensity of the storm...

In all seriousness, our CM had a call with the head of the regional power company, and they are adding 50 extra staff to our community because it now looks like we might get upwards of an inch of ice with a couple inches of snow.

Big storm east of the Rockies yet here we are in northern Utah with no snow on the ground. There was even a housefly in my bathroom this morning.

Meanwhile, I'll be wearing shorts and working in the yard this weekend.

We get our turn next weekend, though.

Have they closed offices today so people can prepare?

Offices not closed today for prep.

Think we're already except I need to run to ABC store.

I was planning a vacation in Waikiki years ago when I noticed there were a lot of ABC Stores on the map. I didn't realize until we got there what an ABC Store is in Hawaii. Yes, they sell booze, but it's really a chain of convenience stores. And how they have so many without cannibalizing themselves, I'll never know. In some cases, there are three within two blocks of each other!

= = =

Regarding preparedness, we always keep "camping meals," a couple of MRE's, and canned food on a shelf in the garage for easy access. We could go a week in the house if we needed to.

It's about 1 ºF at my house right now with a windchill of -10 ºF. It doesn't feel that bad for the few minutes I was there. I went running outside this morning so that I could go right into the sauna afterwards. Around 5:00 AM it was a balmy 8 ºF and there was no wind. I wear many layers when I run outside this time of year and I go very slow but it still feels nice to be out there.

Somebody on Reddit last night posted a picture of their little digital weather station at their house in Michigamme, MI (in the northern part of the UP about 140 miles dead north of Green Bay, WI) and the temp showed -22 ºF. I looked it up afterwards on my weather app and the windchill was -57 ºF. :omg:

I've got a nice pot of onion soup in the slow cooker and the house smells pretty nice right now.

This reminds me that I might need to go move the beer from my unheated, uninsulated garage into my wife's garage which stays much warmer (or I guess I could just put it in the fridge).
